I don't think the Swarm pic is an example, William. That pic feels like it fits more in the "This is a job for Superman!" category.

The Wendigo example works.

Looking back at that "HUN'YA!" page, it amazes me how much I can see shades of both JB and Alan Davis at the same time.

And yet, their individual styles differ greatly.

Wow. I never saw that Leeroy Jenkins clip. So many references are now so clear to me.
Is there a character with many middles names who pompously lists them all in combat? "My name is Samuel (kick) Bartholemew (punch) Agamemnon (dodge) Cornelius (chop) Anderson! (boxes ears)"

I don't know when it first appeared, but I'm with Paul that the current instances are references to Leeroy Jenkins. And perhaps Pokemon. Pikachu!

I can't say when it first started but I think it is much more common now due to Japanese influences.

I have seen Japanese movies where huge amounts of screen time were devoted to characters saying each others names with various emotions and you knew exactly what they meant.  Saying somebody else's name is different than what JB was talking about but conversations using only names got carried over to Pokemon where they were just saying their own names and were also used as Battle Cries.  That starts to stick with people and eventually you will have everyone doing it.

The earliest form I can think of is "Geronimo!",  supposedly as used BY
Geronimo.

While the comic book version may not be an example. I also thought of Swarm based on his appearance on "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends."

That was my thought as well Matt! My son discovered the show on
Netflix. He'll be playing with his figures pretending one of them is
Swarm. I'll be doing something and from his bedroom I'll hear,
"Swaaarrrm, Swaaarrrm!" then inevitably "Spider-Man, help!"

I love that boy!

I had an image of JB getting reading to sit down at his drawing table...

"BYRNE!!!!"

As far as comic books go, "Hulk Smash!", while not technically the same thing, has probably been a huge influence on all this.
