Great idea Robbie! I'd get into that. One of my favorite villains ever is the more obscure Taskmaster. I'd love to see all his appearances chronologically (well...up until the 90s at least. God knows what they've done to him these days).

You know, and I've said this about a lot of supervillains, I wish Marvel and DC would release Essential/Showcase volumes featuring the chronological adventures of supervillains only. I'd pay money to read an "Essential Galactus" volume or "Showcase Presents Darkseid".

That's a great idea. Reminds me of one of my favorite reprint books, THE GREATEST JOKER STORIES EVER TOLD. That one wasn't all-inclusively chronological of course, but it did give me a nice sampling of the Joker as written and drawn by many creators over many years.

To be fair, that would remind people how badly some villains are used quite a lot of time. One of Thanos's merits is precisely that most (if not all) of its early appearances were written by a single, good writer (Jim Starlin), so he hasn't suffered the Villain Decay that happens to most of comics villains. I mean, remember Dr. Doom having his ass kicked by Luke Cage? Or trying to exert Droit de Seigneur on a latverian peasant girl just to be whipped by Shroud and a couple of dogs? Need I go on?

So how do we make this Essential/Showcase Villains idea work? How do we persuade DC/Marvel to do it? :)
If it's not viable, then a hardback featuring at least some tales would be better. I'd happily buy a trade paperback featuring a dozen or so of the best Darkseid tales.

I would have love to have seen Jim Starlin's reaction the first time he saw the "Thanos Copter" in that issue. I'm guessing it was either mild amusement or irritation. Maybe both?

The yellow Thanos Copter had better be in the Avengers sequel! It should also have a toy with Thanos action figure as well!

There are a couple options:
GREATEST (VILLAIN) STORIES (like the Joker collection I recall fondly from 25 years ago).
SHOWCASE/ESSENTIAL (VILLAIN).
The first option -- in theory -- would be the cream of the crop, but the second option has the benefit of presenting all the stories featuring the villain. Part of me likes that option for the same reason I like the SHOWCASE/ESSENTIAL volumes for heroes (not every included story is a winner, either).

The problem I would have with GREATEST VILLAIN STORIES is that it's someone opinion of what would be great, plus there's also a chance they'd pick the most high-profile stories rather than solid, but unknown, stories. So instead of solid stories with a lesser profile, we'd just get the major stories that have probably already been released in trade paperback form.
At least with a SHOWCASE/ESSENTIAL volume, you'd be getting all the stories in chronological order. Even though some wouldn't be winners, quite a few might be, plus the contrast would be interesting.
I've been thinking about this for a while. To be honest, the ones I'd like to see SHOWCASE/ESSENTIAL volumes for are Doctor Doom, Mandarin, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Scorpion, Green Goblin, Dormammu, Galactus, Joker, Riddler, Lex Luthor and, as mentioned here, Darkseid and Thanos.

The recent Thanos Vs. the Avengers TPB covers just about everything (except Spidey Super Stories) through Marvel Two-In-One Annual #2.
I would love to see a Joker Chronicles reprint series, Robbie!

To be honest, I'd have hoped that the ESSENTIAL and SHOWCASE volumes might have started focusing on villains before they started going off in relatively obscure directions. No offence to fans of his, but was the world really yearning for a Booster Gold showcase?
I would love to see a SHOWCASE volume for Darkseid. Try as I might over time, I have not been able to find a bibliography for the character. He, along with Galactus, Dormammu and a few others, is one supervillain who appeals to me so much that I simply must have all of his opinions! :)

Thing is, the times were no longer all that "simple". This is, after all, after GREEN LANTER & GREEN ARROW had cast its seemingly permanent shadow across superhero comics.Compare this issue to the other books being published by Marvel at the same time, and see why that vein would throb in Roger Stern's head. "Simple" became "condescending", and part of the ongoing dumbening of America! __________________________ Fast forward 30+ years later and Marvel puts out the silly/campy and over sanitized "all ages" Marvel Adventure line of comics for younger kids. In the MA books bad guys weren't allowed to have guns, characters couldn't be shown killing other people, and the words "dead" or "kill" (they couldn't even say Deadpool's name when the character guest starred in an issue of MA Avengers). ----- (Edited to correct MY typo! - JB)

This story saw print _after_ Starlin "killed" him in 1977, so this must have been a double insult to him!
