Marvel is what I grew up with, so Thanos to me was the ultimate villain. I started to read DC when JB moved over there. Darkseid soon became one of my favorites. Maybe that's why I had JB do the two commissions for me.

@Kip - I didn't say that there were never missteps with Thanos. I just
think, on average, Marvel has done a better job with Thanos than DC
has with Darkseid.

BTW - Re: Doombots and Darkseid's avatars; JB came up with both of
those ideas, IIRC.

Robert for me in Kirby's hands Darkseid was an epic villain with a complex story.  Later when JB took on JKFW the background story was added to in a way that added to the mythos in a very enjoyable and substantial way - Tales of the New Gods was inspired.  Simonson also did an excellent job with the character as well but I can't think of too many others that have.  Still Darkseid is an epic villain.

As far as Thanos goes I liked what Starlin did when it came out but looking back it doesn't hold up for me and I can't see him as being more complex than Darkseid.  I can't see Thanos as being close to a Galactus or Dr. Doom as far as a Marvel villain threat goes.

Maybe I haven't read enough of the stories but the character seems a knock-off of Darkseid.

I guess Thanos is okay, but compared to Darkseid...

Thanos is to Darkseid what Aquaman is to the Sub-Mariner.

I'm a fan of both but I'll give Darkseid a slight edge even though I'm more of a Marvel guy.

I love Thanos. Of course, it was one of his stories that was among the first comics I ever read, so I guess that might cloud my judgement.

I think Marvel has put Thanos to much better use than DC ever did
Darkseid.

In the Avengers/JLA crossover series, the Avengers are facing Darkseid and Hawkeye says, "Oh my dear sweet Lord in Heaven, he's got the Infinity Gauntlet. And this guy looks worse than Thanos, if that's even possible." That always sounded just about right to me.

I grew up with Marvel, and to this day, don't know much about Darkseid.

One of my favorite sagas of all-time is the original Thanos run from Captain Marvel 25-33, with its crossover into The Avengers ... and then on into Warlock, Avengers Annual #7 and Marvel Two-In-One Annual #2.

I didn't pay much attention after that.  (Except for The Death of Captain Marvel.)  I don't know what an Infinity Gauntlet even is.

You shouold get it. Any Jim Starlin Thanos story is at the very least worth a look - and Infinity Gauntlet is one fo the best!

Godwin's Rule, as applied to Thanos discussions:

Given enough time, in any discussion of Thanos--regardless of topic or scope--someone inevitably mentions the Thanoscopter.

I bet you Darkseid never had a helicopter!!
