Yesterday, Joe Rubinstein posted an Avengers drawing JB penciled and he inked, on Facebook, and it took Erik Larsen all of ten minutes to jump in and tell everyone how many tangents JB drew. Rubinstein didn't even know what he was talking about!

Larsen's obsession with "tangents" is really quite amusing, in a sad sort of way. Consider his "correction" of my GENERATIONS art:

Note that in my version, there are no tangents, but Larsen, "fixing" it, actually had to leave the bottom panel border unfinished in order to "avoid" a tangent! Something which could have REALLY been avoided by simply drawing the border a tiny fraction of an inch lower!

Or higher. . .

Mind you, neither of these explain why Larsen has "corrected" my drawing so that Kam's formerly free floating loincloth now has a tangent with the tree limb in the background.

(I also sorta wonder why full bleed is allowed on Kam's hand/glove, but not on the background? And why is it okay in LarsenLand for a single strand of hair to break the top border, but not the hair as I drew it? Mysteries of the Universe!)

That, young grasshopper, you will learn in time.... if you are patient and listen to the wise Larsen, as the young fawn listens to the voice hidden in the breeze.

Larsen just emailed me with a correction to my post. He wants "breeze" to be replaced by "wind" my new post should now read:

"as the young fawn listens to the voice hidden in the wind."

He also asked if I would accompany my post with drawings, as they are more fun to correct.

NOW it's a masterpiece!

Tangent-free really is the way to go! Subtle improvement

I'm not an artist, but doesn't the correction create a triangle that pops out at you? I thought the whole point of avoiding tangents is to not have your art look like puzzle pieces.
