I like Erik Larsen and follow his stuff.

But I disapprove in general of "correcting" other people's work, particularly in something as subjective as art.

Even correcting someone's diction is fraught with potholes, despite pretty hard and fast grammatical rules being in place. Sometimes an author deliberately breaks a rule to make a point.

I think this is the sort of thing Erik should have done for himself, or, done as a takeoff in his book as a means of demonstrating how he would do it.

Thing is, Erik is a big JB fan and he does things like this -- stepping out of the reality of his role as comic book storyteller -- rather thoughtlessly. As though he's just shooting the shit with other Byrne fans, or Perez fans, or Kirby fans.

Personally, I have had occasional issues with JBs choices on his commissions but I keep those to myself. I won't even discuss them with other fans. There's no point. The commission is committed.

Actually, I have one big issue, and it's not really related to commissions:

I EFFING hate the tilted panel lay out.

I read and reread every issue of X-men: The Hidden Years because I loved the writing and the drawing but I read them by tilting the comics until the gutters lined up horizontally. Really.

I don't even like Adams doing it.

GOD I hate those EEEEFFFFIIIINNNNGGGG tilted panels. I'd rather muddle though round panels with arrows telling me what order to process them in.

Those f*ck*ng tilted panels, those.

Perhaps Larsen could photoshop out the doorframe next to my arm for being an unacceptable 'tangent'.

••

Probably.

Just in case there are any here who are as confused as Larsen about what a "tangent" is, here's a little visual demo:

I can't wait for this to be used as the next "slow artist" excuse.

"Sorry I missed the latest deadline but I had to correct another artist's published artwork for my blog. No, I wasn't paid for it. Why do you ask?"

So basically Larsen's GENERATIONS 3 complaint was that JB used
too many backgrounds. Huh.

Y'know, if this were Neal Adams or Joe Kubert making art corrections
on JB's work, I could consider it sage advice. But Larsen telling Byrne
how to draw is akin to Uwe Boll telling Martin Scorsese how to direct
(seriously, Google Boll and the image that shows up is an apt
comparison to Larsen).

I guess this means that Larsen would have no problem with JB taking a
Larsen page and widening his women's hips and reducing their breasts
back to human proportions on very single panel that they appear in?

Wow, I can't imagine doing what Larsen has done here. He picks at John over texture, and panel layout choices that most of the greats make use of throughout their body of work.I wonder if he is saying that Eisner, Kubert, Kirby, and Ditko were all wrong in using slanted panels from titme to time. Then he clearly demonstrates that he doesn't know what a tangent is. I wonder if Neal Adams knows about Eriks comments on his work. I just don't see Neal letting that go unanswered.

I don't understand his critique where he says Kam doesn't pop in the first panel. That he is lost in the rest of the background. Then his fix for the second panel is to put Kam in a modified background where he doesn't "pop" any longer. He just gets lost with the background. Essentially doing what he claims JB did in the first panel. Very odd "fix".

I won't attack Larsen's art overall as I have enjoyed his work over the years. I find it quirky and fun. However, if he wants to fix some art he should go back and finish that last issue of Supreme he did. Half of that book looked like it was shot from thumbnails.

In regards to slanted panels. I find them to be visually interesting. With all due respect to JB and Neal Adams, I think Alan Davis is the master at using slanted panels.

"and the Thing given a bath"

So basically get rid of all the texture on the Thing?! I personally prefer him rough and rocky than smooth and marble-y.

••

Larsen knows how the internet works. Altho the texturing on the Thing in no way represents "dirt", and he knows it, he can CALL it "dirt" and know there are those who will parrot his words.

++++

Larsen hails from the Image school of "everything is shiny" textures.

It looks like Larsen has been on a rant on Twitter about JB for a long time.  It seems like jealousy to me.  I can't believe he "fixes" JB's art but leaves Liefeld's as is.  That is really pretty funny when you think about it.
