I'm usually not a fan of "funky" panel shapes but in Larsen's "fix" there
is most definitely something -dynamism?- missing. I also don't think
JB's version is cluttered, I had so problem finding the central figure. By
the way, I've never seen that work, Kamandi right? It's gorgeous.

I just don't get it. At what point did this guy become the all knowing, all seeing master of all things comics. Frankly I always considered him just another Kirby clone. One with a VERY big ego. I've always thought that was the biggest problem with some of the image guys. As my dear departed Nanny would say "They are too big for their britches !".

I prefer JB's original Kamandi art; a competent colorist will address the background so that there is no 'problem'. The jagged panels are interesting, and draw the eye downwards.

I appreciate experimenting and choices that aren't 'obvious' (although I agree that clear story-telling must be the priority).

I suppose some of the things he's talking about are matters of taste, although I strongly prefer JB's originals in both cases.  Above and beyond taste, however, is the issue of how abyssmally tacky and disrespectful it is to presume to "improve" the work of another artist in some sort of public venue.

I have no problem with clearing a little "clutter" from the large first panel of Kam above but it's more stylistic than anything vitally important.  On the other hand, EL's decision to shuffle the clutter in panels two and three to get Kam to "pop" is dubious.  The clutter he added in panel two made it the worst offender of all... JB's panels were all a lot more readable than EL's "improved" panel two.  The Thing tangent changes really didn't make much difference and the texture alteration was again purely taste as opposed to anything meaningful.  Has Larsen ever even drawn The Thing professionally?  I think Larsen should spend a little more time correcting his own characters' anatomical exaggerations and a little less time giving "baths" to characters he's never worked with.

I think looking at an inked only picture is far different than one that has color added. The color will make the main figure pop. And removing the lamp post did NOT help the picture. I think in modern day comics, too much detail is removed and it is the details that add to the "feel" of the location and time.  I LOVE the tigers chin overhanging the panel.

Larsen has more than enough of his own art to correct.
