The Bat Alley commission got me re-thinking about Robin's mask.  I recently was doodling in my sketchbook and was trying to get Robin to look right.  I wasn't using any reference and when I started, I was sure I knew enough about Robin that I wouldn't need to.  But the darn face just wasn't looking right.

Drawing the mask straight across the brow just wasn't working for me.  So, I looked at a couple of comics and what looked right to me was the mask coming to a "point" above and below each eye.  Looking at Batman #9 though, it goes straight across.

Which means that "my" Robin, the one that I think looks right in my head, is the wrong one.
The Hanna Barbera cartoons would always bug me because they would leave Batman's cowl open around the neck but they also drew the "straight" Robin mask which I thought was also wrong.
Even the tv show got it "wrong" but I chalked it up to them just not being able to make a mask that looked accurate also sit on Ward's face correctly.
Even MEGO did it "wrong" but again, I just chalked it up to these companies just not being concerned with accuracy or going with "good enough".
Of course, looking at the previously mentioned Batman #9 and much more Bob Kane stuff, it's obvious that his mask is indeed supposed to go across the brow in a relatively straight line.
In my defense, when the style guide, George Perez, Jim Lee and others use the pointed version and it looks so much better(IMO), I guess I shouldn't feel too bad about being wrong.

What is the difference between Burt Ward's mask and Kane's. My eye
isn't catching a difference.

I prefer the "straight" mask that goes around Robin's head.

Alan Davis draws my favorite Robin!

He manages to make the mask outstandingly expressive!

Sorry, I probably didn't make it clear enough but that's why I wrote "wrong" instead of wrong.  I just mean they were what I thought was wrong at the time.  No, the show was being faithful to Kane's drawings, it was me who was wrong in thinking they had erred.

Alan Davis draws my favorite Robin!

Those issues of Detective Comics he did during the '80's were, as far as I can remember, my favorite Batman stories.

Alan Davis, much like JB, is one of those guys that can make me interested in just about any project if he's doing the art.

The Teen Titans cartoon also presented an excellent Robin! Not sure if he's
Dick Grayson or Tim Drake, though...

Alan Davis, JB and Tom Grummet all draw neat Robins. And their Robins
look like kids!

I wish he'd do some creator-owned stuff for Darkhorse, IDW, Image or
Oni.

I like the vintage wrap-around mask better.  It has a realistic look.

Flavio; that was Dick Grayson. When we saw the Robin version of Bat-mite, he said his name was Kcid Nosyarg or Dick Grayson, backwards. Plus when Starfire traveled to the future, he became Nightwing.

I find that in order for Robin to look like Robin, the mask must be very nearly straight across the brow. A little variance is allowed, for expression, but when I did BATMAN & CAPTAIN AMERICA, I actually asked for the first few pages to be sent back to me, so I could "flatten" the mask.
