The Bat Alley commission got me re-thinking about Robin's mask. I recently was doodling in my sketchbook and was trying to get Robin to look right. I wasn't using any reference and when I started, I was sure I knew enough about Robin that I wouldn't need to. But the darn face just wasn't looking right.
Drawing the mask straight across the brow just wasn't working for me. So, I looked at a couple of comics and what looked right to me was the mask coming to a "point" above and below each eye. Looking at Batman #9 though, it goes straight across.
Which means that "my" Robin, the one that I think looks right in my head, is the wrong one. The Hanna Barbera cartoons would always bug me because they would leave Batman's cowl open around the neck but they also drew the "straight" Robin mask which I thought was also wrong. Even the tv show got it "wrong" but I chalked it up to them just not being able to make a mask that looked accurate also sit on Ward's face correctly. Even MEGO did it "wrong" but again, I just chalked it up to these companies just not being concerned with accuracy or going with "good enough". Of course, looking at the previously mentioned Batman #9 and much more Bob Kane stuff, it's obvious that his mask is indeed supposed to go across the brow in a relatively straight line. In my defense, when the style guide, George Perez, Jim Lee and others use the pointed version and it looks so much better(IMO), I guess I shouldn't feel too bad about being wrong.
