Interesting idea. Who would you see bringing them together?

I would suggest Mac Hudson. Seeing how the Avengers and FF weren't up to the task of stopping the M-Men, he doubts that his new inexperienced team Alpha Flight would be up to the task, so he has to go outside the boarders of Canada to collect enough forces to face the M-men.

JB: Something I don't think has ever been "addressed" official is the fact that Hank was a dumb lunkhead when introduced in X-MEN 1, and didn't become a "bookworm" until the third issue. When I was originally concocting my plot for this WHAT IF? I wondered briefly if the Beast's increase in intelligence was something Xavier had engineered, without telling anybody.

Huh! That's a really good point and clearly in the text, but I'd never thought about it. You could totally write that in and it would fit alongside Xavier tweaking Jean's brain with regard to her telepathy. Maybe he brought out something latent in Hank. It's too bad that the idea of Professor X being retconned as doing positive things with his powers is such a novel idea.

The only problem with that is the Beast backup tale from X-Men #51, which shows a pre-X-Men Hank McCoy already intelligent and speaking in polysyllables.

"What If" plots often followed one of two courses:
1) Everything turns out (almost) the same as before, despite the change that has been introduced into the story. That is, the essential goodness of the heroes wins out, and they overcome whatever new barrier or complication was put in their way. JB's "What if the Fantastic Four Had Never Gained Their Powers?" was a great example of this. (Also, it was the very first Byrne FF story I ever read — and I discovered it before I ever read the original FF #1 story itself.)
2) Everything goes completely rotten. For want of a nail, the war is lost. In the very first issue of "What If," Roy Thomas followed this road by having the Fantastic Four ultimately lose Sue, due to a chain of events set in motion by Spider-Man having joined the team.
I see JB's original plot idea clearly went for the second motif of the series. The variant "All New, All Different" ending would've been the first track.

So what you're saying, Eric, is that the stories either turned out happy... or sad? Things either changed... or they didn't? Wow... :-) My issue with all too many alternate reality stories was likely to be repeated with this one. Everything eventually hinges upon Galactus' arrival on Earth. Far too many stories used this as the moment when we either make it or don't... all too often the latter. I can see where it's tempting, but for awhile it seemed What If was Galactus' only ongoing monthly title. As I recall, JB himself made it the be-all, end-all of the MTIO world wherein the Thing cured himself early in the FF's career. I myself preferred the What If's that stuck with petty personal issues changing the course of history: Spidey's self-serving nature and showbiz career, Sue's love of both Reed and Namor, Doom's all-too-easily wounded vanity, Dr. Strange's bitterness and loss of faith... The ones that really took a sledgehammer to everyone's feet of clay. Those were good times... :-)
