…Mr. Byrne with a long "I" sound…

••

I figure as long as you know who you're talking about, how you pronounce it really doesn't matter!

Valmor said .. Meanwhile in Brazil, Cyclops is getting a brand new makeover.

That backpack on his thigh only illustrates what a poor design choice it is for a costume. All those "extra" items on a costume only serve to hide anatomy.

It makes a certain kind of sense for characters like these to want to go into battle with "special equipment" close at hand. But when they suddenly sprout "utility belts" and pouches, I wonder why they didn't need them before.

This is especially true of someone like Captain America. OF COURSE he'd be likely to wear a GI style pouch belt -- but since he didn't from the beginning, and got along just fine. . .

ate to the party: the image on the first page is tragic. The first
comment nails it. Another aug-gests they look like villains, totally true;
another suggests they look like the Hellfire Club, which is not at all
unreasonable.

Actually, then it is succeeding.   This is a team of wanted fugitives.
And they are wanted for evil actions rather than misunderstood
mutant mayhem.

Why all the hate of Cyclops by the Marvel "architects"....? It seems these writers are bound and determined to ruin characters instead of preserving them for future generations of comic readers. In the last decade, these "architects" have done quite a lot of damage to the MU. Every time a creative team has a new run on a book, they change the direction of the book and the main character. The Hulk of today is a different Hulk than last year, but it's supposed to be the same guy..etc. If they don't like a hero, they just write him as a villain..

Unfortunately, ever since Grant Morrison wrote the X-Men the "edgier" Cyclops is considered to be a favorite by many of the writers at the company. I ask them to go read his appearances previous to Morrison's run and ask if this character now is consistent with the character from the previous 30+ years.

The pouch discussion reminds me of this:

Ben Edlund saw the future, and it was full of personal storage space.

Cyclops, while a bit moody at times, was always honest and noble.  A real hero and leader.  Much like Captain America.

Most people hate in others what they lack in themselves.  What better way to get over that little psychological hump than to destroy what was and recreate it in their own image.  Hence, Cyclops is now a "dick" and a pseudo-villain who throws children in harm's way and kills.

Serious question, when Cyclops uses his eye beam now, does it come
out in the shape of a big red X? Cuz that's the only way that mask can
work.

Looks more to me as if the "thinking" -- and I use the word loosely -- behind the X design is that it focuses Scott's beams into a central point.

It's not often we can point to the EXACT moment a character goes off the rails, but in the case of Cyclops, it happened HERE:

MOST of the scene as plotted is there, with Scott struggling to come to terms with his feelings for/about the transformed Jean/Phoenix, but the moment where Ororo walks quietly away to give Scott time with his thoughts, Chris, for reasons beyond comprehension, chose to turn into an out-of-character feminist diatribe. All on the basis of a SINGLE WORD that HE, as writer, had put into Scott's mouth.

From that point, the mail coming in changed. Noble Scott was GONE, and fans were complaining about what a "jerk" he was. The depth of his emotional turmoil was completely obfuscated by Storm's rant.

In the decades since, of course, it has only gotten worse. ("You're a dick." Audience cheers.)
