Hey, maybe the first "good" vampire was Jesus! He rose from the dead and compelled his followers to drink his blood and consume his flesh!

Are we counting Morbius? He was something like 1971, wasn't he?

I saw an episode of Boris Karloff's Thriller last week that skirts the line a bit.  It's played straight until a surprise at the end that some might view as veering too much into comedy...but still, it features an attractive and personable married couple who are quite likable...and also vampires.

We've had mentions of INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE, BUFFY, and Hannibal King.  Why'd Morbius stand out?

Wasn't Morbius "evil" when he first made the scene? When his disease was in remission he was "good" but when he was all vamped-up, wasn't he always evil?
I do remember some 90's series where he decides to satisfy his needs only on criminals, a Punisher-esque type of deal, but that would be pretty late in the game compared to the other vampires mentioned.

I don't have the book to hand, but years ago I bought a paperback called THE RIVALS OF DRACULA, which featured a collection of short stories. In one of the stories, a vampire (unnamed, I think) was speaking to a psychiatrist about his condition and appeared to be filled with regret.

On the wider topic of vampires, it's amazing what you learn. I grew up thinking about how vampires couldn't walk around in the day, but I later read that that was a relatively recent "Hollywood invention".

I think Murnau's film Nosferatu started the daylight myth.  If you read Stoker's Dracula, there are several scenes with the Count walking around in broad daylight.

I believe Morbius was "evil" in the sense that the Punisher was as well. Both were Spider-Man villains of the 70's whose bloodthirsty tendencies put them at odds with the wall-crawler. The characters themselves, however, saw themselves as essentially good and, being "interesting" mixed-morality types, starred in self-titled series in Marvel's black-and-white magazine line. They were conflicted and violent, yes, but still "heroic" enough to rate their own books.

At the very least then, Morbius pre-dates Hannibal King. And the concept of the sympathetic vampire goes back at least as far as the first "turned" victim.

The question was who was the first good vampire character. Morbius is first of those you mentioned, but does he count as a vampire?

Morbius was/is a "living" vampire. His condition arose due to a scientific experiment gone wrong, as opposed to being bitten by a vampire. On those grounds, I'd say he wouldn't qualify.
