Francescos, how is the health of the business/medium over there?

Good question. Despite the financial crisis (and here it's very strong), we still have a lot of comics in newsstands. Yeah, this may sound surprising for you all, but in Italy most of the mainstream production is still sold in newsstands.

And with mainstream I mean comics produced in Italy, superheroes (just some monthlies), French bd published in Italian standard format (pocket and b/w) and the "comics sold with newspapers". These productions in particular are very succesful. Various newspapers and magazines print, alongside the original publishers, cheap versions of more or less famous comics. Usually these trades are in good quality. The most recent is a reprint of popular French bd Michel Vaillant, but Marvel also had its series (currently a complete reprint of Ultimate Spider-Man).

Anyway, the best sellers still are those created and published by Sergio Bonelli Editore. Tex, Zagor, Dylan Dog, their sales are still higher than those of most of the comics printed in the US.

If you do a search of ComicArtFans, you can see a bunch of recent work by this artist, including some recent commissions.

Portugal is also getting quite a lot of comics sold with newspapers. Now it has been announced a Star Wars comics collection (not exactly sold with newspapers, but sold as a newsstand collection) that is going to be - I kid you not - 70 volumes long.

That's 70 200-page HC volumes long! With the ENTIRE Marvel series and most of the Dark Horse ones. Here:

How can the puny portuguese comics market have initiatives like that when the US doesn't? Something is very wrong with US comics publishing!
