I didn't want to derail the ASM #700 thread so I started this one.

The cover to Amazing Fantasy 15 is one of the most well-known and iconic images in all superhero comics.  But...

....man isn't the all-Ditko, rejected cover just better?!?!?!?!

What do you think?  Try not to be too attached to the familiar image and look at it objectively.  =0)

Specifically what I like better about the all-Ditko version:

1. I like the movement.  Kirby's Spidey (and the guy) seems so stagnant by comparison.
2. The main figures (Spidey and the guy he's holding) fill the image more.
3. Despite my #2 reason, the all-Ditko image gives us much more going on in the background which looks fantastic I think!
4. Even the word "Spider-Man" looks much better on the Ditko version (and is spelled correctly!).

I don't disagree with anything Joe said.  I do think the cover that was used has Spider-Man in a heroic looking position.

IMHO - No.  I actually dislike it.

I'm a Kirby lover who never really got into Ditko.

Ironically, I think Spider-Man's has one of the all-time best designed costumes.

Go figure!

I think they're both awesome. On the Ditko cover, I like the visible ground with its startled bystanders, but the Kirby cover's angle is more interesting. I don't think I can choose one over the other.

It's an easy choice for me. The Ditko cover is more appealing to my eyes.

I wonder how it would look in color...

Pretty easy to see why the published cover was chosen.  It's much more of a standard superhero cover, with a dramatic camera angle, vanquished villain, muscular hero, less cluttered composition...  I love the all-Ditko version, but can see how it might have been too weird for the introduction of a brand-new character.

I was talking about the Amazing Fantasy cover just the other day, and realized that I'd never really noticed all the people standing on those buildings in the background on that cover.  Was Spidey passing by a big rooftop party?  Was the guy on the lower building not invited to that gathering?  Did the guy Spidey was carrying run off and tell everyone that Spider-Man was really Peter Parker, the timid teenager?

The Kirby version is actually unbelievably vertigo inducing, having captured Spidey near the apex of his swing, and the guy he is carrying presumably having his stomach flip-flop.

Ditko's guy is a little better supported -- and you can't see the 'oh shit' expression on his face.

The Kirby picture gives an impression of being higher up, which I prefer.

I also prefer the look of Spider-Man's mask in the Kirby version.

I do like the Ditko one, but I'd have to say I think the Kirby version is a more effective vehicle for the launch and better-reflects the 'awesome might' that the cover dialogue describes.

I have to go with the Kirby:

1. Spider-Man's pose is much more dynamic
2. Perspective is stronger
3. You can see the crooks face better
4. Your eye is drawn to Spidey and the crook. (The Ditko cover seems too
busy to me)
5. I am a fan of the webbing under the arms.

I prefer the Ditko version by far. Same goes for Amazing Spider-Man #10.
