But a layer of carbonized air would not just stand there for a second or two, nor would it strain out the word "Heather...." on the way down to the ground as shown on page 1. There is just no way that the scene could work other than the way JB intended. Guardian is dead, and there is still no explanation that works that makes him alive again.

••

That single "Heather" was the central clue in my little misdirect. When the resurrection issue came out I sat back and waited for a tsunami of mail from readers pointing out my "mistake".

Not one single such letter came my way! I wonder how that would have played out in the age of the internet?

This kind of commission I appreciate in a special way because this scene came out long after I stopped reading comics, so I have no fond recall -- which is isn't a bad thing, of course! -- but without I can sit back and blown away by the art alone.

Done!

Ouch.  I remember that issue.  The scene is still pretty strong, even through all the years.

And now Marvel feels fit to outdo this every flamin' month.  It kind of dilutes the impact of the original scene, doesn't it?

My comment about that middle panel that was shown where Mac is turning into ashes while muttering Heather's name: I interpreted this as his whole figure, too.  Given how thoroughly his body was destroyed, it stands to reason that he'd have been virtually unrecognizable at that point.

   Well done, sir!

Wow , that is one powerful commission. I rememer buying that issue off the rack and rushing home to read it. I was shocked to see Mac being the one who died.

Feels like I can reach through my screen and touch Heather's sweater.

Incredible! I don't have the attachment to this story that some do, but I do remember being shocked that Guardian died.  Wonderful piece.

Not many artists can evoke such an emotional response, especially from only one panel.  Great storytelling and angle from a true master.  So much mood and atmosphere.  A new favourite.  Congrats to a very lucky commissioner.

Amazing! Any chance of making an entire comic like that?

Fort JB fans, this commission is simultaneously a gorgeous and
tragic portal in time.

Simply stunning!

Pedro, you may want to check out the Omac series by JB.

Larry Gil wrote, "Feels like I can reach through my screen and touch Heather's sweater."

Dude! Her husband's not even cold yet!

Great piece, great thread.

In re-reading the old reading club thread, it looks like we never got an
answer about the 1966 tv show Heather was referencing. JB?

That really takes me back, I still remember buying that issue at the Suwannee Swifty store near my house and reading it on the walk home, I couldn't even wait until I got there to read that issue.

••

You'll have to remind me of the reference.
