Cool.  Those somehow seem more "real" than a lot of other painted comics I've seen.  It feels like someone took a photograph of John Byrne's X-Men.

Wow, I actually remember this Marvel portfolio pack of the X-men when it came out.

Fastner and Larson, the colorists…

••

"Colorists" falls a lot short of the work done here.

For those two pieces, I did only layouts, not finished pencils. I wasn't crazy about the whole project, truth to tell. Airbrushing -- with real airbrushes, not Photoshop filters! -- was all the rage back then, and most of it looked to me like van art. I'm more of a fan of visible brush strokes and rough edges.

Several years later, when I was doing Superman, a similar job came along. I was asked to provide a figure drawing for a hardcover collection. The editor was quite excited that this would then be AIRBRUSHED, but I was less impressed. "Just promise me," I said, "that this won't come out looking like a Macy's Thanksgiving Parade balloon!" "Won't happen!" declared the editor.

When the book came out, all that was missing was the cables keeping the balloon from drifting away. feh!!

Like the second one best - the team shot.  I didn't care for these much when they came out (JB kind of nailed why above in a way I never would have thought of = Macy's Thanksgiving Day balloons).  They're okay but Gary Cody's painting over Byrne is much more of a delight to my eye.

A funny thing, I remember why I didn't buy this Marvel portfolio pack of the X-men when I was a kid. I looked at it and thought Battle for the Savage Land and The Power Hungry Mutant Magneto looked good but it wasn't JB, so no thanks.

I'm surprised I remember this. I haven't seen that package cover since it was on the shelf for the first time.

It's decidedly gratifying that so many of you realized only two of those pieces were mine. There have been several times at cons when fans have gotten quite huffy when I declined to sign all four of them.

Has Alex Ross ever painted over a JB piece? I know he's done it over
Dave Cockrum's work for a cover of Wizard. I'm undecided over
whether or not I'd like to see such a thing happen, though.

I used to have these as a kid. I had them right over my art desk.
