Marvel will probably never get back to producing great comics.

++

I respectfully disagree, Joe.

••

As must I, tho for a different reason.

Sad thing is, experience has taught me there are bound to be plenty of folk out there who think the current fare is "great", just as there were legions of fans who thought the Seventies were "great", even as many of us long-time readers cringed.

Sometimes I think that certain comics should have ended with certain creators. For every JB Fantastic Four run that compares favorably to Jack and Stan we get those creators that ruin everything that was good about a particular comic. I may believe that there's no need to read another X-Men comic beyond Byrne and Claremont's run but there will be that fan that tells me that they would have missed Lobdell and Lee.

JB wrote: "Part of the reason for this is the shift in target audience. An important element of superheroes in the beginning was adolescent fantasy. They tapped into the frustrations of tween years, especially that "I they only knew!" fantasy that has played thru many a young mind. Peter Parker was a near perfect embodiment of this -- deliberately so! It's even reflected in the copy on the cover of AMAZING FANTASY 15. But as the target audience has become more 'adult' (mostly chronologically), different fantasies have stepped to the fore."

Well stated!

Having read the story, now that it's gone on sale, everyone's right that this story has an easy way out (or ten) when the time comes.  Slott's told some fun Spider-Man stories over the past five years or so, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this story goes.

I might have given JMS a wedgie after "Sins Past" if the opportunity had presented itself.  Or offered to get him a coffee and deliberately screwed up his order.  But most of us have been reading comics long enough to know that there's nothing that can't be undone at some point.

There are probably close to 2,000 Spider-Man stories that people can go back and collect and re-read until the current storyline plays itself out and Marvel goes back to a movie-friendly, familiar status quo.

It's akin to DC's killing Superman in the '90s: "The Superior Spider-Man" is a
storyline that will reach its conclusion at some point, and things will return to
something approaching the status quo--if not the status quo. Years ago, I
didn't believe for a second that Superman was gone for good, but I didn't see
the mullet coming.

One year of Superior Spider-Man (24 issues).

One storyline leading to Peter Parker's return in early 2014.

An all new Amazing Spider-Man #1 in comic shops just in time for the second movie in summer, 2014.

Edited the add: "revealing the trick" doesn't mean I won't enjoy the story, if it's good. Of course the death of Spider-Man cannot be forever... what I care now, if is following stories will be good.

You are likely correct, Francesco.

Well, I hope so! But if this death of Spider-Man is going to follow the same pattern of the death of Captain America or the Torch...

The silly storyline might not bother me so much if all the marketing crap that Francesco mentioned wasn't so likely to go along with it. As a short (several issues at most) story it might not sound quite as bad, but of course it has to mean a fake cancellation, a retitling, a new number 1 issue, an eventual return to the old status quo and either a new #1 or resumed numbering at 701. Everything Marvel does now seems so forced into seeming (to the gullible) to be a jumping on point or other such garbage.
