One also wonders if the "radical" changes to the two biggest properties (Spider-Man & X-Men) that Marvel/Disney doesn't have the films rights to is more than just coincidence...

They're probably hoping if they change them enough they wont be the same properties anymore and they can make movies. ;)

Or if those mythical "fans coming out of the theater" start reading the comics, they'll be so confused and put out that they stop going to see the movies and Sony, in despair, sells it all back to Disney!

If I recall correctly, Gerry Conway received death threats (or maybe it was just threats of violence) for killing off Gwen Stacy.  And Steve Gerber told the story of how someone shipped a duck carcass to the Marvel offices in protest of Howard the Duck being killed off in his second appearance.  What fools these fans be.

You know, this almost makes religious zealotry look tame in comparison if people can get this worked up over fictional characters that DON'T typically promise eternal bliss/damnation. At least with "god" there is some metaphysical stake in it for us...

Having finally read ASM #699, I again have to wonder at the outrage. Based on what Octavius actually did
INVISO TEXT (Click or highlight to reveal):
and if the spoilers are accurately described, Peter wouldn't even be dead in the conventional sense. What you have walking around is Peter with his brain rewired with Doc Ock's consciousness. "Doc Ock" has Peter's memories, and it seems that whatever Doc Ock did does not completely erase the original consciousness (as bits of Doc Ock's personality begin to assert themselves on "Peter"). I foresee Spider-Man becoming Firestorm with bickering consciousnesses in his brain. :/

On the scale with SINS PAST, THE OTHER, and ONE MORE DAY, this rates as inoffensive. If there is any outrage, it should be directed at rehashing yet another variant of DEATH OF SUPERMAN/KNIGHTFALL/BATMAN RIP/DEATH OF CAPTAIN AMERICA.

Marvel's all about pleasing the stockholder's creativity is no longer required.

Anyone still reading NuMarvel's junk is a little-messed up
anyways.

As someone who reads some current Marvel titles: Thanks?

Interesting side note:

I spy TWO John Byrne Spider-man(s) on the cover of #700.
(Clip art from the 1970s no less. Marvel Team-Up I believe.)

I have purchased comics just for Byrne art on the cover, but the Byrne quotient isn't high enough to make me buy this book however.

Perhaps if it was done as a one-off story, it would be OK. But as a multi-part, multi-year storyline, how what can possibly happen other than Marvel losing what Spider-Man fans they have left?

I suspect that anyone that has stuck with Spider-Man through those aforementioned storylines will stick through this.
