"When I read Spider-man as written today, it feels (for me) like a bad actor playing a classic role."
Then why do you read it?
I haven't bought much in a long time, but I do pick up the occasional one, to see what's shaking. When I was a kid, one of the early comics I read was a coverless Amazing Spider-man 149 at a local barber; I was hooked by 70s Marvel, and had an attachment to old Peter Parker.
I realize change is part of the game, and disliking current Marvel is selfish and a waste of time.

But it eased Spider-Man back onto the rails after he had been thrown wildly off course after the JMS years.
Weren't sales during that era pretty decent? I seem to remember it so...

It occurs to me that this "story" -- the "death threats" –– is yet another aspect of the Age of the Internet. As I mentioned, Frank Miller got death threats thru the mail when he killed Elektra, but it didn't become a "press sensation". Hardly anyone knew about it, except those whom Frank told, like me.It also reminds us of something I have noted before, that what used to be the "fringe" has become the center, and now the fringe of the fringe has a soapbox from which to make itself heard.

Brand New Day was a horribly awkward kludge, but anything that got away from the crap that had been piled onto Spider-Man was a welcome sight for me.•• Ah, if only Howard and I HAD done our "Shaper of Worlds" story. It would have been a quick, clean, surgical excision, with no moral ambiguities.

Did Brand New Day bring any truly brand new readers into the Spider-Man fold? |

I, somewhat sadly, admit I was one of the new readers. I had taken a 10 year break from comics and was slowing expanding my books when it hit. I was told it was a "great jumping on point" by the guy at the comic shop so I bought it. I saw mostly what I expected to see with Spider-Man, a Peter Parker who had web fluid, tons of bills, and always seemed behind with everything. I hadn't a clue what came before, as I stopped reading a bit after the clone stuff, so that may have helped me swallow the pill.

I hate the JMS run pretty passionately but JRjr's artwork looked great!

Interesting that JB mentions the Shaper of Worlds because that's the exact character that I first thought of as a far better solution to the marriage problem. I don't think the negative feedback would have been a tenth of what it was. I mean, really, Marvel's version of SATAN as the chosen catalyst? I'm still not sure if that was intentional by Marvel. Did they simply want to generate buzz or was it naivete on their part and they simply wanted to use a more well known character?

It's an interesting study in changing attitudes, isn't it? When Howard and I suggested using the Shaper to fix Spider-Man's broken storyline, then-EiC Bob Harras said that was far too "cosmic" for a "street level" character like Spider-Man. And, put in that context, we agreed.A few years later, and a different editorial administration, and Peter Parker literally making a deal with the devil becomes just fine.

What is Spider-man's rating; Teen? Teen Plus????? If it is teen, then it is being written for the 8/10 to 18 year old; even if it isn't being marketed to them.
====== Marvel has done a great job in the last ten years of making sure I can't trust the content in ANY of there Marvel Universe books no matter what the "rating" on the cover is. They've been very inconsistent with what's allowed within each division of there rating system.
BTW, why can't Spider-Man books have an "All Ages" or "A" rating? Or, have that rating for the entire Marvel Universe?
