Our local Sunday paper, just this morning, has a story telling how stores in our town can't keep guns or ammo on the shelves. Everything is selling out as fast as they can get the stuff stocked.

What the fuck is going on?!?

••

The world is a big, scary place, and most of it is FAR beyond the control of even the most powerful among us. "Doomsday" is a booming business, as people "prep" themselves for various catastrophes, and in so doing convince themselves they are grabbing hold of at least SOME control over their lives.

For the gun nuts, that sense of control is vested entirely in their precious firearms.

This morning, I found myself thinking about some of the arguments hoisted against gun controls or, even better, the elimination of guns in private hands. The "bad guys", we are told, will still find ways to get guns. And, you know, it's true! Just as laws against theft, rape, child pornography, arson and murder (to name but a few) have not prevented these things from happening. And never will. So, following thru the logic of the gun lobby, these things should all be decriminalized, yes? Since we can't prevent the "bad guys" from doing these things, we shouldn't even try!

Read the same type of gun store article about local stores here. What's really stupid is how people are so determined to buy an AR-15 before they get banned, but they keep saying it's not any different than any other semi-auto gun. So which is it? Important to get before they get banned? Or just like any other gun???

There's certainly an inverse relationship with number of guns owned and IQ...

It'd be interesting if one could do a survey and find out how many gun owners have guns because it's INGRAINED into their culture and how many own guns for, say, practical purposes (hunting) or because they've made a conscious decision to buy a gun.

Caught a few moments of an interview with Bruce Willis last night. According to him, if we start tinkering with our "freedoms" as listed in the Constitution, pretty soon they will ALL be taken away from us.

So, Black people, I hope you will turn yourselves in to be re-enslaved as soon as possible, while the Nation is still holding together! And you women -- that whole "right to vote" thing was just a fad, after all. You really won't miss it!

Seems there's two kinds of people when it comes to the pro-gun lobby - A) morally-reprehensible assholes who are quite happy for innocents to continue dying, if it means they get to keep their lethal penis-extensions, and B) gullible morons who lack both common sense and facts (and the ability to make independent, critical judgments), who believe the rhetoric of group A without question.

For the record, it's been two months since Sandy Hook, and the current (reported - minus suicides, unreported incidents and non-fatal shootings) gun-death tally is at 1793...

South Carolina just formed the South Carolina Unorganized Militia (SCUM?)
This is the law there already:

(2) A militia member, at his own expense, shall have the right to possess and keep all arms that could be legally acquired or possessed by a South Carolina citizen as of December 31, 2012. This includes shouldered rifles and shotguns, handguns, clips, magazines, and all components.

(3) The unorganized militia may not fall under any law or regulation or jurisdiction of any person or entity outside of South Carolina.

So I guess they don't think they actually surrendered during the Civil War?
And isn't an unorganized militia just a mob with guns?

Calling it the "unorganized militia" is circumvention. Once South Carolina's militia becomes "well regulated" it falls under the purview of the U.S. Constitution.

Sure, but without being "well regulated" they lack the protection of the Second Amendment, and are, indeed, "just a mob with guns".

Lately I have found myself wondering what would happen if some nut went off at a gun show. This would be the idealized NRA scenario, where lots of guns would, according to them, serve to bring down the perp before any harm was done.

Standing at the entrance, spraying the room with an AK-47, would give the targets plenty of time to respond before injuries or deaths occurred, right?

I hadn't realized that firearm ownership actually made you faster than a speeding bullet… They should put that on the adverts!

According to the NRA, guns are magical instruments, worthy of Harry Potter. Gun violence, for instance, can be reduced by having MORE guns. Having guns in the house, even when they are "unloaded" and "locked safely away" and fitted with "trigger guards" acts as home defense.
