Not to go off-topic, but there was a "moon landing was hoaxed" documentary on Channel 5 recently. Very entertaining, but I cannot believe there are still people who believe that - they are akin to those who still believe the world is flat.

"Only" two injured. Is it time to make this thread a sticky because this happens so often?

Brad - might as well include this in the sticky (already posted up-thread):

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/crime/2012/1 2/gun_death_tally_every_american_gun_death_since_newtown_san dy_hook_shooting.html

Again, how many people need to die before it's agreed that the current gun situation isn't a good thing at all and therefore needs fixing?

Problem solved! Give school janitors guns and let them shoot it out with any potential threats. Next!

We will not get anywhere so long as organizations like the NRA insist that gun violence doesn't START with guns.

Arguably, they may be right. Gun violence can be said to start with mental instability, with poverty, with frustration, anger, a raft of familiar human emotions. However, gun violence ENDS with guns, and that's all that matters.

I think what bothers me the most about our current situation, is that no one can even bring up the topic.  No one from either side can say, "Hey, let's examine this critically and hear from all sides and maybe look into what we may be able to accomplish and get these gun deaths under control." without the far right immediately jumping around and screaming about people taking their guns.

The bizarre shit I have seen people posting about Obama wanting and unstoppable regime and etc...

No one is going to steal the second amendment away.  That is just not realistic.  why can we not sit down and have some civil discourse on the topic?

There just don't seem to be any gun owners who have reasonable opinions about the topic. At least, none that you ever hear from. It's just the nuts.

So many pro gun people are just uneducated as well. A girl
at work was complaining about Obama taking guns away
yesterday. I explained no one was considering taking guns
away, just limited assault weapons and clip size as well
expanding background checks. She asked what I meant by
background checks, after all, her mother had to get checked
when she bought a gun at Cabelas. I then explained how in
just a few days there will be a gun show less than 10
minutes from work where anyone can go buy a gun with no
check. Mental patients, convicted criminals. She had no
idea this was possible.

Obama outlines $500M gun control plans, including assault weapons ban, executive actions

The NRA response was sadly predictable:

"Attacking firearms and ignoring children is not a solution to the crisis we face as a nation," the NRA said in a statement. "Only honest, law-abiding gun owners will be affected and our children will remain vulnerable to the inevitability of more tragedy."

The NRA response will be wrong headed no matter what Obama says.

And so far, Obama has said. . .   nothing. Nothing that will do any good, anyway. A total repeal of the Second Amendment is the only thing that can possibly do any good. No guns outside police forces and the military. None.
