There was one comparing the damage that hammers can do with guns, forgetting that hammers are not created with the intent to kill. Plus, a guy who walked into a school with a hammer could probably be disarmed with relative ease.

••

As I have said many times before, those who cite hammers, baseball bats, knives, automobiles, etc, as being "just as deadly" as guns when "in the wrong hands", forget -- or, more likely, seek to deliberately obfuscate -- the AMOUNT of damage that can be inflicted with a gun in a short time.

Somebody swinging a hammer has to be on the move, and, pretty quickly, chasing intended victims. It is possible to outrun a man with a hammer. It is not possible to outrun a bullet. Or a spray of bullets, coming from someone who doe not even have to change his position in order to unleash his mayhem.

I don't generally pay much attention to Piers Morgan, but I applaud his very vocal stand on this issue, and I hope CNN has the stones to let him continue to express it.

I encourage everyone to read the book AUTISM'S FALSE PROPHETS by Dr. Paul A. Offit, which deftly dismantles the anti-vaccine argument using science and facts.

••

An important point to remember is that the British doctor who started this whole scare with an article published in THE LANCET, turned out to be on the payroll of a big pharmaceutical company that had hired him to discredit another company's vaccines. He was discover, THE LANCET retracted the article, and the man himself went to prison for FRAUD.

I did not know that, but it explains a few things.

By the way, I'm not the world's biggest Piers Morgan fan, but it seems that some of his critics believe in free speech, but just not for him. He is vocal and has made some sense on the issue.

I did tune in expecting a debate (I hadn't heard of Alex Jones), but it just seemed like a one-man rant to me.

A number of commentators have pointed out that the gun nuts are rallying behind the Second Amendment as writing over the First.

"Since this awful tragedy (obviously, we must never forget the children), I've had to "unfriend" quite a few people on Facebook. I cannot believe the 'debate' I'm seeing and some of the crap that has appeared on my newsfeed."

I'm not anti-gun, but my gun-toting friends have driven me nuts. We live in Iowa. We don't have a high crime rate. My house is unlocked right now and it is empty. (Technically, not at this moment as my 11 year old is home sick with the flu.) We don't own a gun at the moment, but largely its because I haven't made it any kind of priority. If I am going hunting with a friend, it is never hard to find one to borrow.

So, I ask my gun-toting friends if they feel safer knowing they have a gun in the house to protect themselves or knowing that when their child is at a friends house that there is a gun somewhere in the house that they could find and play with together.

As I said, I'm not anti-gun, I'm anti-stupid-people-who-own-guns.

Trouble is,most civillian people who feel the need to own a gun(especially miltary grade assault weaponary) ARE stupid.Just look at the Piers Morgan thing, because the gun nut can`t debate in a rational manner,he resorts to insults and offers violent resolution,do you think he CAN be trusted with guns?

Being an Englishman, where gun laws are very different, I don't have any friends who own a gun, but I have some Americans on my Facebook (or American commentators/journalists) and their comments appearing on my newsfeed have driven me nuts.

It seems some of them care only about their precious guns and not the right for a child to walk to school without being shot.

I wonder how many really have ever thought deeply about their gun ownership? It's almost as though it's ingrained in some people's minds.

"Just look at the Piers Morgan thing"

I have a hard time watching this because I don't believe Jones is a true representation. Rather, I think CNN just intentionally found someone that would look really, really bad. It doesn't take that much effort and according to a producer friend of mine who worked for CNN for Over a decade, its a rather normal practice.

Brian, I agree with you to a degree. This nut was brought on because he has been petitioning to get Piers deported. He also has his own internet show. Seems like he is using this news tactic to his advantage to gain more attention for himself not to win any debate.

A true representation is that assault weapons sales WENT UP after the tragic incident in Newtown.... doesn't take alot to see that there ARE gun nuts out there and we need to toughen the gun laws before more people become casualties.
