Robbie: Comics should be the same. It can't be the same if you pick up a preview magazine three months prior to an issue and learn that someone's gonna die or get unmasked. Better to read the issue and find that out yourself!
---
I only had a few of those comic magazines when I was a kid... I never thought they gave much away. Marvel Age was pretty much the same for me. It didn't give much away, it only made me excited for upcoming comics.
Previews used to give too much away... so I stopped reading that.

Will: I was also fortunate to find Hero magazines in a used book store for .49. I had never heard of this magazine and enjoyed reading them. But the best part was that one of magazines was still sealed in its bag with JB's Proto-Tykes magazine in it.
---
I was just going through some old Hero magazines and found some neat Byrne stuff. I think those old interviews aren't allowed to be posted on this site, but if you can find old copies, they are worth checking out. The Proto comic is fun... and it's the right time of year to reread that one!

I kind of miss the old fanzines. At the time, it was the old CBG and Fantagraphics volumes, but I think Wizard started to take it a bit too far. Instead of interviews with the minds behind the magic, it became more like a promotion of certain products which in the end disappointed me. While the Internet ultimately led to the demise of the genre, I think we saw the acceleration of the extreme fanboyism start with Wizard. Looking back at it now, I could use the analogy of the sausage: it sure tastes good, but you don't want to watch one being made.

I've got a good chunk of Nathan's photo as well. And for the same reasons. It used to be that you got a bit of insight into what that creator was thinking and if you were lucky, sketched and unused art. It took me years to find the magazine with the unused Captain America pages. I was fortunately to have a bunch of LCS growing up, not to mention Chicago ComiCon, so finding was not as much of a problem for me.... finding them at a reasonable price was...
As Carmen mentions.... the old fanzines seemed to cater more to the fans of the industry. You'd get big names and small names, you'd be as likely to see a cover feature on JB and Fantastic Four as you would Eclipse or Comico. Wizard and their like seemed to kill that.

I own the original art on that cover... but I can't find a damn copy of CBG #500! I've been looking for a copy for years.

What amazed me -- I picked up a comic magazine, and it was tearing down artists and writers. This would NEVER have happend when I was reading comics in 78. NEVER! I was stunned! The earlier magazines were about helping the industry, not causing drama and strife. |

I guess you've never read an issue of The Comics Journal from 1978 or 79. They were all about "drama and strife" from the very beginning. Reading one of their letters pages from an early issue is eerily similar to reading an average comics-related message board today.
