A better choice could have been the cover of issue 23 which they used as the back cover. (Although it was recolored incorrectly as half of Talisman's body has now been colored as rubble.) But that is an amazing cover that, had you not read the inside story, may not have automatically assumed that was Snowbird. I preferred the original blue background- that cover stood out.

…half of Talisman's body has now been colored as rubble…•• The mind boggles. This is all about colorists being far to concerned with HOW they are coloring, and not WHAT they are coloring.

When I see the new(er) AF logo, I think of this version of the team...
When I think of the old logo, I think of this team...
...for that reason, I like the original AF logo best.
I feel the first 12 (maybe 13) issues of Alpha Flight are pure gold! Story, art, team members... those issues are killer.

AF went through a ton of change in a very short period of time...

Looking back at covers, I think the cover for #25 should have been the trade cover. That sums up the major crux of the storylines in this trade.

JB-I'll admit, I wasn't crazy about that pink background when issue 12 was first released, but it looks like a Renaissance masterpiece in retrospect!___
JB, DID you have a look you were thinking of when you did that cover?

I'm still torn with computer coloring.... but for me, I think it comes down to personal taste....
There are some computer colorists now who started out as traditional colorists, and I find that if I liked there traditional colors, I still like their computer colors and vice versa.

Just bought this and read this cover to cover. It includes Incredible Hulk # 313 and Alpha Flight # 29 to finish off the cliffhanger in #28. I have read the Byrne issues of AF tons of times and enjoy them every time I do. I love the introduction of Madison Jeffries, Box, and Talisman to the team. The reveal of Guardian's return is one of the biggest "WHAM" moments of my early comics reading. I totally bought the explanation in #25!
It is amazing than JB has no emotional attachment to this team because I truly enjoy these arcs and storylines. My favorite aspect of Alpha Flight is the solo stories and having the entire team getting together only once a (publishing) year for the big menace.
I haven't read the Mantlo/Mignola issues of AF in years. My copies were sold years ago when I realized no one could do Alpha Flight justice other than JB. There are several items which Mantlo seems to get wrong right off the bat -- Aurora and Northstar are completely out of character in #29. I never had a hint that Jean-Paul was romantically interested in Walter in the Byrne issues. Aurora is called Jeanne-Marie several times without batting an eye. Shaman crawls up in a ball with a loss of faith and Heather immediately starts thinking of ways to lead from the front by acquiring super powers. The kicker is Gary Cody showing up at the end to offer reinstatement of Canadian government status for the team. All the uniqueness of this team fell away with that change.
I remember sticking around until Lady Deathstrike was introduced and wondering why a significant event in Wolverine's back story was being published in AF. No incarnation of the team since has ever thrilled me the way those first 28 issues did. JB, thank you for this team and sticking with the book for as long as you did.

The kicker is Gary Cody showing up at the end to offer reinstatement of Canadian government status for the team. All the uniqueness of this team fell away with that change.•• One of the things I did on ALPHA to keep my interest up was try to make the book as different as I could from the usual Marvel fare. From, for instance, what I was doing on FANTASTIC FOUR. When I left, it did seem that Bill embarked upon a campaign to make everybody in the group as "ordinary" as possible. Puck wasn't really a dwarf. Bochs got his legs back and slimmed down. Heather became a superhero. And, of course, there was the brief flirtation with the idea that Northstar was not Gay. (I wonder where that idea came from?) It seemed a lot of very odd choices, to me. ++++ JB, thank you for this team and sticking with the book for as long as you did. •• You are most welcome! Your comment about "sticking... for as long" as I did is interesting. ALPHA FLIGHT is one of the titles often cited by those who insist I "never" stay on books for the long haul. Of course, my 5+ year run on FANTASTIC FOUR has also turned up on that list! Sometimes I blame myself. I have, on occasion, said I've looked at the 100+ issues Stan and Jack did on FF, and aspire to such a run myself. So come people look at anything LESS than that as a shortfall. (In the way some referred to my return to NEXT MEN as producing the issues "fifteen years late".)
