Normally I think Bill Maher is a dope, but he made one observation that has stuck with me.

After a horrible plane crash, in which everyone aboard was killed save one young boy (who lost his whole family), people started referring to his survival as a "miracle". It's so typical of human beings to do that. To try to squeeze something"good" out of the worst catastrophes.

But, as Maher put it, killing 100+ people and not this one kid was not a "miracle". It was "God blowing a no-hitter in the bottom of the ninth."

One would be hard-pressed to find a supportive other worth their salt
who approaches this boy to inform him that this was a miracle.

And after a while telling the same tale -- "I'm good! Hanging in there! Soldiering on! Thanks for asking!" -- becomes wearisome.

***

It got on my nerves too. Basically, my wife will post a Facebook invite to people we know, just once, and any takers we'll be glad to help. I certainly wouldn't want to be PUSHY about "helping."

On another note, so many people about me are stating that getting generators is now a priority. Solution?

I suppose so, if this is "the new normal". As noted, I plan to look into a generator myself.

I priced a natural gas generator, which would be great for me because I already have a natural gas line to my house, and that would avoid any concern of hunting down fuel for a regular gas generator. But the cost...! Wow. THOUSANDS of dollars. Whew.

People around me were already scrounging for generator fuel and generator-homes were in the tiny minority. What happens when most homes get generators?

Oh, and here comes the Nor'Easter, right now -- ice pellets and wind.

PLEASE HOLD OUT, MY POWER....!

Yeah, I am very much aware of the OUCH factor. When I got my inheritance from my Dad, I declared it the "House Fund" and have been using it for home improvements, so that will most likely be the source of cash for a generator.

Only waited 20 minutes for gas this morning. It's getting better as more stations are reopening.

I'm gonna sit home and work at HOME for the first time since last Monday (gasp!), while the baby sleeps upstairs, and my wife hunts for gas.

"But by about Day Five it started to get. . . tiresome!  I said to a couple of my friends that I was beginning to understand what it must be like for people with nasty diseases... "

You have a long way to go, sir.

Just when Sandy ended . . .  . I'm now looking out my home office window here in Connecticut, and snow is falling and accumulating; slowly, at least.

It's begun to snow a little bit here in New Jersey too now.
