Tim, those pictures are horrifying, but as you say, I have a feeling the damage is far worse than we can see.  Panoramic shots convey the generalized devastation, but I imagine a number of the houses that look relatively unscathed in those photos may not even be inhabitable either from being moved ever so slightly off their foundations or from the eventual mold / water issues you mention.

When I was a kid, the "Blizzard of '78" kept schools closed two straight weeks (!) and we were without power the first week.  I remember awareness of the cold and huddling in our den where we kept a fire going in the fireplace most of the time.  There was definitely a boredom factor (no tv and radio on batteries for news reports / school closings only) but I recall plowing through a bunch of books, including about five Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators and a couple Hardy Boys.  Being pre-dvd, internet and X-Box, somehow the lack of electricity was more of an inconvenience than a lifestyle changer.  Electric stove so we barbecued outside regularly in the middle of February and ate like kings!  There was a rumor that they were going to keep schools open till almost the end of June to make up for our vacation, but when the time came, they blew it off and we never made up any of it!

My neighbor, an old, retired gent who seems to be out on his rider mower about every two days, is even now busily (and noisily) attacking the fallen branches on his side of the property line. I guess he has a generator.

Doubtless this will mean I'll have to avoid him until my lawn care people get around to to same tasks on my storm damage. After Irene and "Snowtober" the old boy was quick to chase after me when my guys took ten days to get thru their backlog of clients.

Really got wearisome to have him popping up like some woodland elf every time I went to the mailbox.

The houses up at the end of my street and behind me on the next block have had power for almost 48 hours now, but we're still waiting. Their streets had power lines down from fallen trees, but ours didn't. If only we had a chainsaw.....

Paul Kupperberg just texted to say the power is back in his corner of Connecticut. How I hate him!

Tho he did offer use of his hot shower, so I hate him somewhat less!

(The "predictive spelling" on my iPhone does not recognize "texted"!)

Just got home and power is still out. Im noticing my wish list getting smaller and more basic each day. At first I wanted my constant internet access, then just the ability to watch a movie or make regular coffee. Now, after four days, just five minutes of hot water would be a magnificent treat.

Much of lower Manhattan, where my parents live, has power now.

I read online that some people in Connecticut were throwing eggs at
the linesmen repairing the electric lines. These are the guys trying to
help them!

====
When Hurricane Issac hit us, a tree service had to cut the neighbors
100 year old live oak, pretty much to a trunk, before the power crew
could fix the downed lines. These guys were putting in 16 hour days.
She had the nerve to bitch about her trees being cut and the fact she
was without power for 5 days. Me and mine decided to feed them
lunch using our BBQ grill.

We've become so spoiled. For centuries the human race lived without
power and running water. Some people go without power for a few
weeks and lose there minds. People like Bill described and my ex-
neighbor really make me sick.

Stephen, that was nice of you to do! Too many people can't look beyond their immediate wants. I can understand how frustrating it is to not have power, I think we've all been there at some point, but why interfere with the people trying to get things back to normal?

Stuff like this tends to bring out all the kooks...
