Those were the numbers being tossed around for the whole area even before the storm hit.

Very hard to get gas here in NJ now. The stations that have power are running out or have hour long lines. Luckily I have a coworker who lives nearby and can carpool tomorrow.

The more I hear about this, the more I count my lucky stars that the full brunt of the thing somehow missed me.  Just a few miles away, there were a couple of downed trees and one of the creeks remained over its banks into Tuesday morning, but nothing more serious than that.  Power blinked out twice, but not since that.

That being said, I'm starting to hear that we may be in for a snowy winter.  If it ain't a hurricane bunny-hopping a Nor'Easter on the way through New Jersey, it could be a big snow or ice-storm dumping on us in January.  In either case, I think the house is overdue for that generator backup system (I'd get by with just the heater, refrigerator, water pump and clothes washer running then).

There's a two and half hour wait for gas at one gas station over here.

-- and soon the petrol will run out and there will be gangs on the highways wearing hockey masks and leather bondage outfits while throwing metal boomerangs.

85+ hours.

Coke bottles in the fridge melted completely, so swapped 'em for the half dozen I'd left in the freezer. That should buy me a few more days of unspoiled food. Hope I won't need 'em!

An additional annoyance: my iPhone has started showing "Message Not Posted" warnings, when them message HAS been posted. So, if I sometimes seem to be "repeating myself", you'll know why!

No worries. My grandfather used to repeat himself too.

The Coke bottle ideas are gold, JB - that's extended your fridge much longer than most.  Glad you get to do some work in the kitchen -- those windows must get plenty of natural light.

My brother has been without power since the storm as well.  The absence of a heating system is probably the hardest part for him.

I have not experienced a power outage of this length, but it is revealing to me that I am not prepared for this.  And an extended outage is a very real possibility for me in earthquake country!

A slideshow from The Philadelphia Inquirer/philly.com showing the damage to the New Jersey shore:

These barrier island towns are a huge part of my youth, and when I have visited in the last few years, the rush of memories is invigorating.  But these pics are just stomach churning.  I can only think of the long term damage from Katrina, in which the mold that formed on the homes from extended sea water exposure made the homes unlivable.  I fear the damage is even worse than I can imagine.
