But if two (or three, or eight) of those pages blow you out of the water with some amazing artwork that you can't take your eyes off of (or love so much that you want to buy the originals and frame them) is it still a waste?

Yes. I find it a waste of story. I do not find it a waste of art. I would commission the Nightwing image for my art collection but I would rather read something else in my comic collection. Of course that is my subjective opinion.

I remember reading a HULK that contained this double page spread... I wasn't impressed...

There's another breathtaking Frenz double splash from the Celestials storyline that I couldn't find online.
