The mention of Kirby drawing fewer panels to a page in later comics made me realize something that I hadn't before. I have become a big Kirby fan later in life and largely via the 4th World and Kamandi and Demon hardovers that came out recently. I wonder if the larger presentation and  drawings in these "decompressed" pages was part of the reason.
Did Kirby get "better" when he got to stretch out a bit more?
I suppose not, but it allowed me to notice his power more, maybe.

In that sense, a double-page spread and/or splash page can be a waste.

Can be a waste.  But when? And by whose rules?

See, this leads into a question of how do we define what a waste is?

I mean, this thread began with a quote from JB that the Nightwing pages being a waste.  However, as both an artist and a comic book fan, I don't agree.  I love the pages and think they're beautifully done.  Had I bought the book they appear in, I wouldn't have felt cheated at all.  I'd have felt like I really got my money's worth.

Now, to me, the antithesis of the Nightwing spread is this:

Not only is it lacking any pizzazz, it's a swipe (oops...sorry, Rob, I forgot...it's an "homage").

Yet.  There are fans out there that probably love this and think I'm out of my mind for what I just said about it.

I know there have been some recent comics I've read where entire double-page spreads were used for headshots.  Yes,headshots.

Ha! I'd love to see one of those.

Aside from MODOK and the Watcher, I wonder whose head could actually fill a double page spread and still look like a head!

So do you consider the Frank Miller original a waste and lacking pizazz?

Joel: a couple last JB X-Men images.... these strike me as early versions of what JB is talking about above....

Even earlier...

Obviously it's all subjective.  Like I mentioned on the previous page, I've read some comics recently where I particularly noticed the overuse of splash pages and spreads and thought to myself they were "wasting" space.  Others might have loved it.  I saw what they were trying to do with it, just didn't think it was done efficiently.

I would agree to call it is a waste when it doesn't further the story in a significant way. A big two page splash can be incredible to look at and to own. But if it doesn't move the story along at a natural pace or add to the wow factor of the scene I understand where JB is coming from in calling it a waste. We only get 20 pages for 4 bucks. A double splash takes it down to only 19 pages of story. Make it count. If you can do it smaller with the same effect, then that could be an indicator that it is a waste.

Having said that, I am jealous of Fred owning that Nightwing piece. As a piece of art it is spectacular. As a piece of storytelling your MMV.

Double-page headshot:

Cool image?  You bet.  Do I love this series?  About as much as anything else I'm currently reading.  Could it have been accomplished in one page...?

Kinda.  But I'm not a huge Frank Miller fan, either.  Loved his original DD stuff and some of Sin City.  Only liked TDKR.

We only get 20 pages for 4 bucks.

Right! But if two (or three, or eight) of those pages blow you out of the water with some amazing artwork that you can't take your eyes off of (or love so much that you want to buy the originals and frame them) is it still a waste?

Meh.  I think I'd rather just continue looking at people's favorite (or least favorite) spreads as they post them.

Joe Hollon said it best: Obviously it's all subjective.

This DPS works for me...

...although the composition/idea was originally used a single panel...
