Here's JB's Namor from issue #1, I love the image but would it have worked just as well as a splash page?•• Absolutely! Or even HALF a page, vertically.

I think the take-away from this thread is that there are times when using a DPS is good and brings dynamic impact, and times when it isn't, because the space could be put to better use in telling the rest of the story.
