Is it true that Kirby drew on larger than standard boards? With a 10 x 15 inch drawing space, a bunch of small panels must pose a challenge to get everything crammed in clearly!

++

Back then Kirby would have used the "Twice up" page sizes for his art.

••

Correct. Most of the pages in my Kirby Korner are Silver Age, and on the old "twice up" stock (actually four times the area of the printed page).

The size was stepped down just before I got into the Biz. Charlton had a huge backlog of stock cut to the old size, so started printing the guides on the oversized paper, leading to a great amount of waste around the edges.

…seeing the character half off the page like that is really awkward

++

I dunno, it kinda works for me. It gives the creepy effect that he's walking off the page, almost crossing the line into 'reality'.

••

Hm. When the image appeared on my screen, my first impression was that it was two thirds of a fold-out. Doesn't really work for me.

I feel totally ignorant but I'll ask anyway.  Nathan or anyone else, could you direct me where those JB double page spreads are from in your first post.  They are stunning!

That beautiful Doom DPS is a good example of effective usage. It's the 'reveal' that the characters are tiny, so the giant Doom is incredibly startling.

••

Byrne: Yet I can't shake the feeling Kirby would have done it in one panel out of six, and made it JUST as effective!!

I feel FF #236 completely delivered in the story dept (I loooove that issue)... so I feel very glad the comic had this:

...instead of something like this...

As noted, it is generally agreed that there is enough storytelling going on in that spread from 236 to justify the two pages.

But Kirby would have made the second layout work just fine.

Byrne: First, a small correct. Looking for the images below, I did find ONE double page spread in the first hundred issues of FANTASTIC FOUR.

During that period, the first FF Annual was released...

David: I don't recall a double page spread in XMen during that time so this was special....

---

Neil: Remember this one?

Another one...

That panel from X-MEN would actually have worked much better as the top half of the spread. Much more scope.

Incidentally, Nathan, have I mentioned that my favorite scene in TANGLED is the one where Mittens the cat teaches Bolt how to behave like a real dog?
