You know, seeing these DPS really does put paid to the lie that modern comic artists are slower because their art is more detailed. Some amazing art that is really bringing back memories. I get that they don't maybe advance the story as much as two pages of panels would, but man are they an effective tool for emphasising scope. And hey, beats two to 22 pages of talking heads - they may 'advance' the story but not that much

First, a small correct. Looking for the images below, I did find ONE double page spread in the first hundred issues of FANTASTIC FOUR. Tho it's a rather curious image:A spread with gutters down the middle? When DID Marvel learn how to do full bleeds? Meanwhile… Some pretty spectacular double page spreads posted above. Nevertheless, consider the following, all of which are half pages or slightly more…

Do you feel "deprived" or "cheated" by any of those images?

I think you've hit the nail on the head; I'd consider a DPS a 'waste' if the action could've been achieved in a smaller panel with equal effect.
There's an issue of New Avengers (9, I believe), where the artist used an excessive number of splashes and double page splashes, resulting in a small amount of story filling the book. Having smaller panels packing each page with story may not achieve the 'drama' the writer intended (I'm assuming here), but at least I'd get bang for my buck!

The Boy Commandos/Blackhawk DPS by Perez was from the latest Brave and the Bold series from a few years back. It was issue 9.
