"Death in the Family" and "Knightfall" -- drawn by Aparo -- reminds me somewhat of SUPERMAN III and IV. The stories are bad but they still star BATMAN and SUPERMAN.

Conversely, no matter how "good" I'm told the Nolan Batman films are, they don't star BATMAN, in my opinion.

When I think of Aparo's Batman, neither one of those images come to mind.

Really didn't care for Mike DeCarlo's inks over Aparo.

This is one that often comes to mind, as the page sums up the character nicely:

Chad Phantom Stranger #22 is a great cover.  It might be my favorite of Aparo's too.

I remember those cool Nightshade back-ups in Captain Atom - wow!  Was a treat to find Chartlon as a kid.

Loved it when he inked his own pencils the best.  Magic.

Stephen, when someone brings up Aparo's later work and mentions those two stories, I tell them to check out TEN NIGHTS OF THE BEAST. It's definitely my favorite story that Aparo provided art on during the 80's. Starlin's story is really good and DeCarlo could even mess this one up.

I never noticed this myself, but I learned from reading one of his interviews last night that Aparo would often leave clues in certain issues as to who would be Batman's team-up in the NEXT issue. One issue he apparently left green arrows strategically placed to see if anyone would notice.

SER: I agree completely. In fact, I was just thinking of that storyline when I came upon your post. My first Aparo comic, in fact, was BATMAN 414. I enjoyed his work in all the issues from 414 to 420 (the last installment of TEN NIGHTS OF THE BEAST). I recall someone commenting in the foreword to the TPB for TNOTB that Aparo's Batman had massive hands, which is true. He's a lithe but imposing figure.

Upthread Sal Buscema was mentioned as similar to Aparo which I agree with.  I also see similarities to Ross Andru--both followed iconic artists on titles, but are brilliant in their own right.

Jim Aparo's work on BATO is my favorite, especially the Geo-Force/Superman fight.  I got the sense he really put everything into his run on that series.  Brilliant storytelling, great costume design and people in street clothes drawn as well as in tights. If I see any Aparo books, I feel like its my duty to buy them.

I absolutely hated the Batman run with DeCarlo's inks.  What a waste of good pencils.
