I wondered that myself, Mike. The only thing I can think of is that Aparo liked being able to play around with the DC universe and or liked working with Haney.

I loved Aparo's work, on every title he did. When I was younger I put him just behind Adams for my favorite Batman, but as I got older I really appreciated him even more, to the point his Batman became my Batman.

Andrew Hess mentioned that Aparo lettered a lot of his pencilled and inked work, too. He was a darned good letterer, too.

I don't know if I have this right, but as I recall Aparo could capably do one entire issue, pencils, inks, and letters a month. When he first began at DC, he alternated between Aquaman and Charlton's Phantom. Once he became ensconced at DC, he would alternate between, say, the Spectre and Phantom Stranger. For awhile he alternated between Brave & Bold and Detective, during the extremely memorable Bat-Murderer saga (which also guest-starred the Creeper!)

One of my all-time favorite covers, right there...

Early Aparo is definitely best. But it's all spectacular. Strangely, his Batman isn't really a favorite (I'm more in the Sprang, Gene Colan camp), but his Spectre and Phantom is definitive.

SHOWCASE PRESENTS recently released a Spectre volume, which I think may reprint Aparo in glorious black and white.

for a brilliant three-part scan-fest of Phantom Aparo glory.

I recently picked up the above book, for my first read of Aparo's classics. And a must-own by any fan of comic book art.

Maybe my favorite Aparo cover not involving the Phantom or the Spectre.

Jim Aparo was born to draw a Shadow comic book, which you can imagine in the cover above as a crossover of Phantom Stranger, Deadman and The Shadow.

I wonder if Aparo had any affection for The Shadow.

It pains me that that page from Knightfall is the most prominent Aparo image of Batman. For one, it shows our hero defeated and it also features Bane, who not even Aparo could make visually appealing to me.

When I think of Aparo I think of his World's Finest covers, his Spectre run, and that cover to Detective 448 that Brian posted.

I think Aparo assimilated the Adams' Batman better than anyone else in the early to mid 70's frankly....on a monthly basis.

I remember that one! That was just before Batman breaks him over his knee, wasn't it...?
