JPB, Lovely colours and inks on the Panther, I really like the way you highlight figures when you colour them.
Mac, I've been after a certain look for the Thing for years and then you produce that, pretty much what I've been after, just like that. I could learn to hate you, LOL. There is such life and vitality in your lines, very organic.
James K, I get what you are saying. My aim with my posts is to try and capture the essence of the character, so when I initially break it down I'm not conscioulsy thinking of any particular artist, just the character. Therefore, some prove to be more difficult than others because I can't get a handle on the character, the Silver Surfer, for example. Even if you were the only one to like them would be good enough for me.
As for influences, JRJR is my main man. That goes back to the '70's when I latched onto him, I could get near him whereas JB for example was way beyond me, just too good. What I have done over the years with the artists I like is broken down their work and traced their influences. If you want to get some understanding of JRJR for example, you need to look primarily at John Buscema, then John Romita Sr, a touch of Alex Toth and presently a large dose of Jack Kirby. Of course each of those artist will lead you to others.
Although JRJR is my main influence, there are many more at work in my drawings, my fascination with hands goes back to Gil Kane and Steve Ditko, but JB has also been a huge influence in that respect. The way I ground figures is all down to JB.
You have to remember, this is the first time in about twenty years that I have drawn with any regularity for other peoples eyes. In those years it was always with a biro on the newspaper for my own amusement. Drawing with the biro has been beneficial in helping me find the right line though. One side effect is that I cannot copy other artists work or even from anatomy books. I get bogged down in the technical aspect, this line goes here, that line goes there, instead of thinking, this is an arm that is a muscle. My mind goes into auto pilot and any spontaneity goes out the window. As a result, I keep making the same mistakes as you point out.
As I have said I do this for fun, but recently with people of the calibre of JPB and Mac and others taking the time to colour and ink my pics I feel maybe I should try to take it a bit more seriously, apply myself so to speak. Mac is absolutely right in what he says, I haven't even drawn a background let alone attempted any sequentials. Thanks to the encouragment from people here I will give it a go.
After all, we can talk about artists style all day but what truly makes the greats is their ability to apply their style to the juxtaposition of panels on a page, page after page in a convincing manner, in other words, to tell stories.
Sorry for the ramble, I'm Irish after all and we people have been known at times to talk the hind legs off donkeys.
