Last one from last night, an unfinished first time attempt at Conan, as ridiculous as it may sound given how little he wears, I had to stop when I couldn't remember what his costume looked like. If clear, it is a good example of how I build up a sketch, seems all those years drawing with a biro may not have been wasted.

luke i really, really dig your stuff...but i'm a huge (well not like FAT huge, but
huge as in devoted) romita jr. fan.
that black panther piece is probably the best i've seen you do yet.
the posture is pure romita but the ribcage is all byrne...nice stuff.

you figured out it was me? whatever gave it away...you're a sharp one, no
doubt.
luke-you don't need much to have your figure drawing right where it
needs to be...you've already nailed the hand gestures.
the hands are just about the most expressive part of most comic art...so
much emotion and feeling can be delivered with the positioning of the
hands.
you've nailed that part already...now all you need is to tighten up on your
anatomy and tackle those backgrounds.
your work may be "rough sketches" at this point, but i doubt anyone
would call your figures rough.

nice jpb...rough sketches don't have presence.
virtually all of luke's pieces have a nice weight and presence to them.
i'd like to see what you're stuff is like when it's a little more fleshed
out...that's where you're going to find your voice.
i love the tiny nuances to your stuff...black panthers piercing eyes, conan's
furrowed brow, she-hulk's dimpled smile...those things are what gives your
work character and the presence i'm talking about.
i don't know if that makes sense to anyone else or not...hopefully one of you
guys or gals will get what i'm saying.
