i actually kinda like the sparseness of the back ground...like he's standing
on the surface of something in the middle of a giant gas nebula...but i
totally get what you're saying about being able to take your time as
opposed to being somewhat constrained.

either way, the stuff looks good...the more time and loving attention to
detail only enhances the final product.

inking over someone is a tricky business...it's easy for an inker to totally
overpower the pencils with their own inherent style.

tom palmer and klaus jansen come to mind easily...i remember seeing
john buscema on avengers and inked by palmer and then seeing steve
epting inked by palmer the next issue and it looked exactly the same.

inking also depends greatly on the amount of info the penciller adds to
the page as well...so well done on both fronts.

mac's pencils weren't super detailed and you're inks only accentuated
what was already there...it's a nice amalgam between the 2 of you.

i'm glad you decided to share it.

hey...has anyone else noticed that my posts seem to break and form smaller
lines then everyone else?

darren's post above mine has long line lengths (say THAT 3 times fast!) and
i've got much smaller lines.

no big deal or anything, just noticed it and thought it was weird.

After Cockrum's cover to Uncanny X-Men 101.

More the idea of a sketche than a sketche. More a joke than the idea of a sketche.

Dont be modest.
Im of the thought that the inker fills in the gaps
that the penciler misses. Would John Byrne be as good if
Austin never inked him?
I would say in this case 70% inker 30% penciler, if i where to
really pencil something, it would be the other way around.

"the more time and loving attention to
detail only enhances the final product." -James

Although this can be mostly true, the frightening aspect is that some inkers kill the work the longer they spend on it.

"inking over someone is a tricky business...it's easy for an inker to totally
overpower the pencils with their own inherent style." -James

To be frank i think you need to be honest with yourself, as an inker. Ask yourself, "What is your job?". If you're inking someone from a long list of fill-in-artists then I suppose exerting a little style isn't a bad thing as, if your exertions are good then you are likely to be remembered. If you're inking a penciller who is an "attraction" then you need to remember who has top billing and help present their work as best as you are able. At least that's my thoughts on it.

That said, never lose sight of what it is that makes you, you!

"tom palmer and klaus jansen come to mind easily...i remember seeing
john buscema on avengers and inked by palmer and then seeing steve
epting inked by palmer the next issue and it looked exactly the same. "- James

That is a selling point in my book! I've gone from feeling that Tom over-inks to really being in awe of his line weight choices. Fantastic inker.

"inking also depends greatly on the amount of info the penciller adds to
the page as well...so well done on both fronts." -James

I like it when the pencils are fairly loose...leaving a little wriggle room for me to flex. But then loose pencils -actually- takes a lot of confidence from the penciller! Most these days seem to put down -exactly- what they want the end result to be, giving more power to the call for just darkening the stats and giving the inkers the heave-ho!

"mac's pencils weren't super detailed and you're inks only accentuated
what was already there...it's a nice amalgam between the 2 of you." -James

You can't easily hide quality. It'd take a far worse inker than me to hide MAC's qualities.

"i'm glad you decided to share it."-James

No problem. Thanks to MAC for sharing the sketches with us in the first place and for giving me the permission to ink it.
