Sorry, MAC! Thanks for relating what life is like on your side of the world. I guess I really had no idea! Take your time! I do know it takes me too long to even somewhat perfect a pencil. I would hate to think how long it takes someone of your calibre! My apologies, sincerely, again.

Just some sketches today:

A REALLY bad Power Girl:

An anatomically-challenged Phoenix:

A Nightcrawler I was working on as a belated-Birthday present to Mary;  I'm gonna keep at it until I get one I like (and send it to Mary as well as post it):

And some Demon/Devil-type mask:

Thoughts?

Hello everyone,

Hope you had a nice weekend.

Mary, Thanks- very kind praise. I have been developing BattleWorlds thinking of it first as a brand, which will include comic books, but meant to be much more. It’s meant to be what I call cross-media compatible, meaning: suitable for comics, animation, games, live action, licensed properties, and other ventures.

I work as a creative director in the entertainment industry in L.A. Whenever I do have some free time I work on BattleWorlds.

Mary- you NC and friend inks, good, and I like how you are improving on anatomy and proportions. Lookin’ good!

Anthony- Mighty Mouse sad??? I believe he’ll always come to save the day.

John- Great Superman colors. It was also nice the inks and then colors.

Mary – Robin, great start. Walt is one of my favorite artists. You chose a great dynamic Walt Robin shot. BTW, that X-Men TT graphic novel was fantastic. Claremont/Simonson/Austin. It was a prime example of quality craftsmanship; a good read. I never saw the French cover art, very nice!

Justin- good inks over Mary’s Robin. What pens/brushes do you use?

Mac- Hang in there! I know all about work overload. Your work is absolutely terrific, but post only when you can- don’t burn yourself out! Keep it up!

New BattleWorlds post

Illustrating THE SEER

The Seer is a mythical literary figure from the BattleWorlds story. He is a myth from Amazonian legends, said to be the founder of Amazonia several millennia ago.

I’m using him as the subject for the GSPO concert on SF/Fantasy movie music.

Today I will show you how I illustrated The Seer. This is an example of my style; remember, there is no right or wrong way to ink & color, etc. It’s whatever works best for you. In this case, the following method works best for me.

I haven’t seen a term for this particualr style, and I haven't met anyone who works this way (which probably confirms my insanity, haha), so for lack of a better term, I call this technique Multi-Layered Texture Lines. All layers are hand drawn lines, and will vary in color and transparency.

Instead of completing the illustration as one fully-rendered inkwork, I separate all these elements because I want to change their colors, and if all this were actually one inkwork, my intent wouldn't work at all.

PENCIL LINE DRAWING: I started off with the basic composition

MASTER INKS: The delineated form with line weights in the contours

CROSS HATCH: no contours just cross hatching the figure in free form

INK WASH: this lays out the shadows.

BASIC COLOR FINAL: The Seer with his Weapon of Light- a sort of cosmic “brass knuckle”. After coloring these in Photoshop, I merged the master line, the cross hatch and the color wash together. The "Eye" symbol was also saved as a path, so i may re-use it easily at any size.

BACKGROUND- This was originally a 50- layer file. Once i was satisfied with the final art I flattened it, but kept a few layer separate.

FINAL ART- The Seer by George Edwards

Was this helpful for you? Just a tiny little demonstration of different ways to illustrate. Feel free to draw The Seer and any other BattleWorlds characters such as Mega, Sol, Night, etc!

Keep up the great work everyone!

Best Wishes,

What is funny is that when I was inking Robin I kept thinking about how great it would be for James to color it.
