Hello everyone,

Marcus- John Romita Spider Woman! With the New Avengers, that's one hot character right now.

Matthew- Frank Miller!!! great tribute!

Anthony- very nice Vampirella & monster. Good portfolio piece

Marcus, I like the poses for Spidey vs. Scorpion!!

Jon- your Wonder Woman is looks well defined- nice!. The actress is sporting a pre George Perez WW hairstyle, along the lines of Ross Andru/Vinnie Colletta, and your drawing sports the current Perez look, with Art Adams influence. Good portfolio piece

Chris, great girl shot, realistic style.

Mac- great bible works, pencil, inks, colors

Darren- great character! I like your character sketches

Flavio- Interesting sequentials! Lots of expression.

Marc- Great Ditko tribute.Definitely fun.

Mary- Lightbox: one of the best investments for an artist!

Let me just take this moment to tell you I'm really glad to see the progress as a group. There's some good stuff here, and it's a good foundation to grow from.

I mentioned some pencilling books in my last post; I just wanted to add a few more that I personally like: DC's how-to for Pencilling and Inking (both by Klaus Janson); George Bridgeman's Complete Guide to Drawing From Life; the great Burne Hogarth - Dynamic Anatomy, Drawing Dynamic Hands, Dynamic Light & Shade, Drawing Dynamic Heads.

And on my short list for comic book and animation artists (I can name many but I'll name just a few today): Byrne, Kirby, John Buscema, Bruce Timm, Jim Lee, Mignola, Kubert, Toth, Darwyn Cooke, Alex Ross, Neal Adams, Simonson, Miller, BW Smith. Much respect to many others I left out for lack of time.

You guys are producing some amazing work so keep it up!

GE

Hey, Darren what do you ink with?  I love those sketches, I can really see the Byrne influence.

Marc- Nice Ditko work! I tried to think Ditko when I did the Spidey vs. Scorpion.

Flavio- Really good story, chilling.

Here is a Kirby Kommision

Thanks! That drawing was a lot of fun!  I'm jealous of those who can ink well with a pen like that. Or when JB says he inked a cover with a sharpie. When I try it never comes out well. I ink with a 8404 Raphael #3 sable brush, a #107 hawkquill and FW ink right now. I do use pens for backgrounds and such.

Wow, what great stuff!  Everyone - I'm lovin' it...

Mary - I scare a lot of OTHER people with my inking...

Heh.  No, really.  The lightbox is the way to go.  One thing you can do, if you have access to the technology, is to scan a penciled page into Photoshop, adjust it to look the way you want it, reverse (flip) the image, then print it out onto a piece of bristol (or whatever) on -the back-.  when you drop it on the lightbox, you can ink away and if you mess up, just print another one.  At work I have access to an 11 x 17 printer, so this might not work real well with everyone.

Currently, I'm trying to follow in the footsteps of Vlad in doing all my inks digital now.  It's a bit liberating for me in that WHEN, and I say again, WHEN I mess up, I just hit UNDO or erase the mistake instead of having to let the white out flow, and I'm back to a clean sheet.  The down side is that my stuff looks a little stiff still and doesn't have that -by hand- flow to it (although on the Green Lanter I inked several pages ago some of the feedback given to me what that it looked like I inked it by hand - so little by little....)
