A few years back, while doodling around, I came up with the following page prelim. The face of the creature being chased by the two hunters later became a character I created as an idea for a comic which I never followed through on. Then Dan Brereton (creator of The Nocturnals, Gunwitch and artist on books like World's Finest, Black Terror, etc.) had this contest in Diamond Comic Distributer's monthly catalog PREVIEWS to "Create a Nocturnal". I was a fan of the comic and knew that he didn't have a Big Foot creature in the series so I submitted him as "Red the Yeti"...a creature who likes soda pop, Johnny Cash songs and long walks in the woods.
Dan picked my character as the winner (the prize was a watercolor painting of my character).

An ad idea that I had for Red (think the Mean Joe Green Coke ad) after he becomes the famed last of the Yetis and the adored creature of millions...

What a cool contest and prize. I loved the Nocturnals. We saw too little of them.

JIM --- welcome.
This is the same JM from Bowen Designs right?
I would LOVE to see you "sketch book" --- I would also REALLY dig it for any pointers, etc -- I'm "experimenting" with sculpts using Bowen busts as "go-bys" -- but I have NO idea how to properly figure a wire frame, etc etc etc. If you felt inspired to post a series of pictures showing the evolution from "lump" to "statue" - I would greatly apppreciate it.
Any web sites you recommend?

As far as I know there's more NOCTURNALS to come, David, at least in the form of a hardcover reprint and perhaps some new material.

Been learning to draw again!
Friend of mine turned me on to "Wally Wood's 22 Panels that Always
Work" (http://joeljohnson.com/archives/2006/08/wally_woods_22.html )
and it actually got me to dust off pencil and brush and try to work my way
through them as an exercise.
So much to learn (and re-learn). With every one I had a different "oops"
of "oh, right...forget to follow the contours with the shading. Oh,
right...forget to make the outline bolder than the interior lines..." and so
forth.
I'm actually rather proud of the last panel so far, though. Almost looks
like a real drawing.
