Great lessons and work! Nice Cap, Luke! Remember when you render, whether in pencil or ink, you are trying to define the shape thru thick or thin lines or feathering.

Thanks for the words of encouragement JPB.  Glad you like the CA.  That is what I consider a rough, if I get to that stage and I like it, I tighten it up, try to finish it and then it gets posted.

The technique you suggest Darren is something I have been playing around with recently.  One or two comments in the art challenge thread suggested that my stuff was hard to see so I switched to a softer lead and have tried this.  The recent Thing sketch had some of this.  Just to clarify though, inking is not on my radar, too much to learn with the pencil first.

The comparision in style but moreso ability to Paul Neary is well merited, to me your inks are not just of a professional standard, I would take them any day over most who work in the comics industry.

Thanks for the tips Marcus.  I understand what you are saying, all I need to do is find the approach that works for me.

Excellent work Luke, I'm very pleased that you gave it a stab! Too many times people say "yeah, I'll try that" and they never do.

Hopefully it'll make you think about how the shadow will differ on the chainmail from the fabric aspects of his uniform!?

Also another 'related' tip that I picked up from, although he wasn't the first to observe such and I have heard from other quaters, is to never be fearful of covering up your lovely art with block shadow!

Like how much of his nearest leg would actually be highlighted? If his torso is in that much shadow, where would it's 'cast' fall over that leg? These sort of thing -add- to the image, not detract. Goes to what you were saying earlier about "What to leave out!"

Nice, Luke! You know I've been looking at John Buscema's work lately in a issue of Alter Ego, that is a trubute to him and I'm struck by how much shadow he uses on the figure.
