Funny how JB's version looks more like how one would expect Kirby art to look - particularly the blacks. Nice!

Well done, JB. Your piece looks like Spider-Man drawn by Jack Kirby. You
fixed it without tuning it into a John Byrne drawing. Hope this makes sense,
because I am complimenting your work here.

I like all the different versions. Each are pretty amazing. I do think JB did a fantastic job there.

Two things I noticed, looking at all the different versions and comparing them:

1. The two that have been inked in a 'Kirby-faithful' way, JB's and Mike Royer's, appear (to my eye, at least) like different eras of Kirby - JB resembling the '60s Kirby of Fantastic Four and such, while Royer looks more '70s, New Gods-ish. Makes sense, considering who worked on what in the past!

2. While JB's doesn't look like a 'Byrne Spider-Man', the buildings are certainly 'Byrne buildings'* - and looking at the others, Frank's look like 'Frank Miller buildings', and the ones in Kirby's original pencils are the most 'Kirby' part of the piece (IMO). And that's just from the inks, which vary less from version to version than Spider-Man! Very curious, and neat, too...

Very "alternate realitish". One where Spider-Man is a villain, or a dark vigilante.

JB's version is nice!

Since I inked exactly what Kirby penciled, what you're seeing there is the great influence Kirby's "building blocks" approach to architecture has had on my own.

JB's inks look most right to my eyes.

Millers don't look right to me, especially the head.

But the pencil looks like it belongs in the Eternals' comic book (or
anyone of that era of Kirby books) and it is amazing how much inks
change the feel of something.

Edited because of a second look.

I see JB's work in how the costume webbing is done and how the feet look. I hope it isn't odd to say but you have a distinct look for how you do the costume webbing. Even the eyes seem to become more like JB drew them because of the way he draws the scallops on the mask. Kirby with a hint of Byrne. Well done, sir!

I know I do -- and it bugs the heck out of me!!

I've been drawing Spider-Man professionally for forty years, and yet the precise "magic" of the webbing on his costume somehow eludes me. It's nothing major, nothing that looks dramatically WRONG, yet to my eyes it doesn't look quite RIGHT, either.

The frustrating part is, I don't know what I'm doing that's different. When I do those cover re-imaginings, with often a Romita Spider-Man head in the corner, I trace that off and think There, see! That's how you do it! Then I do what FEELS like exactly the same thing on "my" Spider-Man and. . .   it isn't! It's different!!

If I had to recognize the inker, I'd definetly use the feet as the reference. Spider-Man Byrne feet!!! Really cool!

Love the blacks too!

Thanks for this treat, JB!

The Kirby inked by Byrne version is radiating Bruce Timm at me.
