I had occasion to read Brainiac's first appearance post MOS-reboot. It's interesting to imagine where JB would have taken the character. I liked the focus on mental powers and think it would have added more story potential than essentially Superman fighting a super-intelligent robot.

The Timmverse Brainiac had an interesting motivation (accumulation of all knowledge) but I didn't like the design. I loved the Vic Perrin-esque voice by Cory Burton, though.

I didn't like the Kryptonian origin of Brainiac, and the design could have been better, but otherwise I'm a huge fan of the Animated Universe Brainiac. He's cold, calculating, extremely powerful and resilient, and he has a ruthless self-justified motive. That's some great villainy there!

I also grew up with the Superfriends cartoons and the Chris Reeves Superman movies(tho I did see the original in the 60's Superman cartoon reruns).

This was how i familiarized myself with Brainiac.  I did not even know that the giant computer in Superman III was supposed to be Brainiac(not the best way to present Brainiac).  He did not even last long in the movie so i did not notice.

I was always most familiar with the Marv Wolfman(robot skull) Brainiac.  Then, also around that time, is when I started reading some DC comics more often.   Now an adult, I backtracked and found out about the original version.

And, I discovered the original version had the potential to be a very interesting bad guy.  But, DC being DC, I feel, has not capitalized on the opportunity to make Brainiac relevant.

When I first saw the original, he just looked like a green guy with a ray gun and a spaceship.  But, From what I know about Brainiac he has a very cosmic origin.   A writer can start there.

Sorry to make this thread swerve off-topic for a second, but that's the first time I've seen a Kirby Batman - wowzers!

Ok - I'm over my little 'swoon' moment. Carry on, folks - nothing to see here...

My favourite Braniac is from now on JB's BRANIK. But shit it's a beautiful picture by Curt Swan.

I tend to be biased towards the Mort Weisinger/Silver Age era of Superman comics, so my favourite Brainiac is the green-skinned one who shrank the Bottled City of Kandor.

I was not aware of this and I'm not sure you could even say they "presented" him.

I like the original design. I just wish he had pants. The robotic Super
Powers version was pretty cool. Many other versions have come along
in the comics since, but I didn't really enjoy any of them until the Geoff
Johns/ Gary Frank ACTION story. There are a lot of stories that Johns
has written that I didn't like but that was a heck of a read.

In one of the recountings of Krypton's destruction, the Science Council refers Jor-El to the Cosmic Clock*, which measured the planet's life cycle and predicted countless millenia still to come for Krypton.

When I saw the Animated Superman's origin for Brainiac, I thought it kind of cool that essentially the "clock" was given a face (ha!) and voice. As a sideline variant of the character, I think it works well enough. However, I prefer the classic depiction of Brainiac as an alien, city-collecting, space marauder...

*I had to double-check that name, it sounds so lamely Marvel-esque...

Has JB ever drawn Brainiac (LOSH storyline doesn't count) I don't
know if I recall him ever drawing the character.
