I always liked Cap but this was the one, as a kid, that had me spending my comic book money on this comic instead of another.

Ahh, how i MISS covers that actually gave you a glimpse of the story inside... that's my favorite era of comic books.

Charles - It's a lost art. Don't know why there's this seeming trend for 'poster'-style covers, since logically, 'teaser' covers would make for a better marketing tool. "Curious as to what's going on? Buy this comic to find out!"

There are more covers on the stands now that show something from
the book; so it is probably easy to tell if action covers that advertise
the story actually sell better than poses.

Has a character--since the 1990s, when extraneous pouches, buckles and straps caught on--EVER produced anything from those pouches in a comic that you've read (apart from Batman, who's been using the utility belt thing longer than most of us have been alive)?  I've never seen anyone pull out so much as a walkie-talkie or a sandwich or smelling salts or a scuba mask or anything that was of use in combat.

Sadly it's not the only case. They've referenced Secret Wars, House of M, and Acts of Vengeance by name over the years.

That's hilarious. Are there any scans of the panels? I can't imagine that working in any context.

Here's the cover for issue #1.

***

Seeing things like this really frustrates me. I'm glad some of my favorite artists are still working steadily, but I can't bring myself to buy their work. How can I enjoy JRJr's work when the costume looks like that? I loved the way Alan Davis drew Cap a few months ago, but didn't buy it because of the writer. George Perez on Superman recently? Walt Simonson drawing the Avengers? I can't do it! Not if "voting with my wallet" means voting for bad stories despite great art. Cap is my favorite character and I miss following his stories every month, but I'll have to pass on yet another version.

It'll be difficult not to buy this title, mainly because of JRJR on the art.  Why couldn't they put him on the title when Cap's costume actually looked like his costume...damn...

This is why I get more excited by looking at TPB reprints of older Marvel and DC stories in the Previews catalog than by any of the new monthlies.
