The nadir of Bendis for me was an early issue of ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN.  Mary Jane and Peter are sitting on a bed.  Mary Jane tells Peter that she knows he's Spider-Man.  What follows is a full page of Peter's reaction and subsequent falling off the bed.  Listen, I love me some Mark Bagley.  I think he's really underrated.  But when a reaction that should have been, at most, two panels is stretched out to a full page, that's the point in time when I realized Bendis just doesn't get supheroes.  Mainstream superheroes that is.  It's reached the point of absurdity where two, three and four pages are taken up with a single discussion (often nine panels per page) that reads more like fanfic than anything else.  He certainly did that in his creator owned work, but when it bled into mainstream titles you could see the writing on the wall.

I have to say that I'm looking forward to JRjr on Cap. I don't read any Remender comics but I hear good things about him. But can even JRjr make the eyesore that is Cap's new costume look decent?

Shawn, I've read Uncanny X-Force, Secret Avengers and Venom by Remender and love them all.  I haven't decided about any NOW titles, save yes on Waid & Yu on Hulk, but I will probably give his Cap a try.

From the weekly pull list threads, seems you probably have the closest taste in current comics as I.

We could probably throw Adam into that mix as well. Waid's Daredevil has given me some hope that maybe the Hulk has a chance. He'll really have to clean up the mess that they've created with Bruce Banner but honestly, I figured Daredevil to be damaged goods after Shadowlands and Waid saved the character.

Not even JRJR can make that look like an improvement.

Cap's shield is in an offensive position and his face is clouded in shadow. That's closer to Wolverine or crazy ninja Batman than Captain America for my tastes.

Roger Stern used to tell the story of his first "encounter" with the Sub-Mariner. As I recall, it was an issue in which Namor fought the Hulk, and Rog said his reaction was "A naked guy fighting the Hulk! He must be TOUGH!!"

Has that kind of thinking been lost? Are we now only impressed by a Captain America who wades into battle armored top to toe? Does he need brass knuckles to deliver his piledriver blows? What's in those pouches that he apparently never had need for before? Turtle Wax for the shield?

sigh

LOVE JRjr's work (how odd is it that he's credited as simply "John Romita" in that promo piece?), but I hate what Cap's scale-male has become. Being intimately familiar with is career, I know he's just drawing it on model but...ugh. It just looks ridiculous now.  Add in the pouches...for what? I have no problem with the rendering itself.  Cap's face in shadow highlights the drama and he often uses his shield as an offensive weapon.  But the new costume?  Fail.

The masthead seems to be a bit of a throwback, mashing together two of the classic ones -

But maybe I'm giving them to much credit......
