One of my smaller recent joys:

Paul Kupperberg told me about an interview he'd given, covering his time as editor of WONDER WOMAN. The interviewer brought up the "bad blood" between Dave Cockrum and me, and asked how I had reacted when Dave was assigned to draw the WONDER WOMAN ANNUAL.

"It was John who'd asked for Dave," Paul replied.

Cross out 'dated' and write in 'tried and true'.

It's a good bet that JoeQ would have found a way to alienate John Buscema too!

Indeed it is not! Alas, however, I suspect if Big John were at Marvel today he would be working with editors who would feel compelled to bury his pencils under every Photoshop filter they could lay their hands on.

Fortunately, I don't think John would care much. His focus seemed to be on what HE produced, and once it left his hands, he "cut the chord".

Oh wait he is alive and working in comics.....
Doing a mighty fine job of it as well.

Certain people working in the industry should hope to be as lucky  as to have a career as long as John Byrne's

He just keeps on going and going.

If John Byrne not been born Stan Lee and Jack Kirby would have invented him.

I think they did!

At the very least, without them I might be Dave Gibbons!

Or possibly James May -- tho that would require a time machine.

Would it be fair to say that the mid 70's work of Kirby and Ditko were considered dated by readers at the time when so many other artists were showing a heavy Neal Adams influence? It doesn't upend the foundations or the quality of Ditko and Kirby work exactly...it only implies the kids find it out of step with most of the other work being produced. Trends being trends.

Herb Trimpe attempted to update his work in the 90's by adapting it to the style of the Image crew. While no artist wants to be called dated its far worse to just adopt what's "happening now" if  the current trend is awful.

Like I said, I have no problem with my work being called "dated" -- if the label is supported. But I have a big problem if it's just tossed out there with nothing offered to back it up. Suppose I wanted to actually LEARN from this experience? No chance I could!

What book was the reviewer even talking about anyway to throw out such an idea?
