In my voyage through the decades of Hulk comics I've made it to the Byrne issues!  Man, oh man!  So many iconic images of the Hulk in those few issues!  They are permanently burned (Byrned?) into my brain and make me smile every time I see them!

Joe Hollon: "I can just see where this is leading when every story arc has to trump the previous one without Hulk ever returning to the character I recognize as one of my all-time favorites. Oh well."

Yeah, like people have said, "classic Hulk" is pretty much gone for good by this point.

You're at JB's run, which is very much Savage Hulk.  Then Al Milgrom brings back the Grey Hulk in #324, following the lead of the first few stories (i.e., more sinister than savage).  Peter David picks that up and runs with it until #377, when he attempts to blend the various personalities, rather than doing "Hulk with Banner's brain" (YMMV as to how successful he was).  Then Onslaught came around in the #440s and took Banner out of the equation, which made him more Grim than Savage this time.  Then Banner came back and I don't recall how the personality was affected, but I think we were back to Sinister.

Don't recall too much after that (and I haven't read a Hulk comic since Peter David's visit, aside from picking up the Planet Hulk hardcover), but I know there was a period during the Paul Jenkins run (Hulk #12-33 IIRC) where he attempted to go the "cake and eat it" route, with all Hulks were up for grabs.  Kurt Busiek and Erik Larsen used it as an opportunity to use "dumb Hulk" in their Defenders revival (12 issues plus a 6 issue follow-up mini), so that might be worth a look.  Just note that it leads to a "Defenders go bad" storyline at the end (retitled "The Order") with the grey Hulk.

The "Hulk-with-Banner's Brain" run started right after the Rocket Raccoon issue.

So, I guess you could say he jumped the squirrel.

I actually like the Hulk as a character more than Spider-Man.
Unfortunately, good Hulk stories have been few and far between in the
last 20 yrs. I wish JB could have made it past six issues in both of his
runs as a writer. As I mentioned in another thread, I was really
enjoying the JB/ Garney run when JB either left or was taken of the
book. When Paul Jenkins came aboard, the book didn't just get off
track, it took the expressway to Hell.

Lee Weeks is my favorite Hulk artist. Looking through a search, I
found this...

Sorry about not having links for the two. Trying to do anything extra
on an iPad has become difficult.
