why so few Sal Buscema covers despite his long tenure as interior artist?  Any ideas about that?

I have to believe it was because Sal was doing Hulk and ROM concurrently for the bulk of the 1980s, not to mention being the pinch-hitter whenever an Editor needed a job done, like a MARVEL TEAM-UP or MARVEL PREMIERE thing. Plus, I'm thinking Al Milgrom, who I feel did a giant chunk of ROM/Hulk covers, probably wanted to keep his art-hand in, being he was an Editor at the time. I'm only speculating.

I'd have to research the time frame for when Milgrom stopped doing Hulk/ROM covers and became full-time artist on AVENGERS and WEST COAST AVENGERS. I feel like the covers led into the interiors, perhaps because Al had relinquished his Editor post. But again, I haven't researched.

One of my favorite Hulk images of all time. I had this on a sweatshirt when I was a kid, on the front, and on the back was the Hulk in the same post shown from behind. I once had pics of me at eight yrs old in that shirt sitting in the hand of a King Kong statue in Virginia's "Dinosaurland", but a building fire claimed them.

One of my favorite aspects of Trimpe Hulk: the Trimpe Hulk eye squint. Always seems like a throwback homage to the Fleischer Superman.

I've been enjoying Brian Hague's posts quite a bit recently, FWIW.

Also, good thread.

Wow. Thanks, guys! That is very much appreciated.

Plus, being mentioned in the same breath as Herb Trimpe...! I may need to go lie down now... :-)

Just finished issue 309 (July 1985) and the blurb in the back announcing it as Sal Buscema's last issue.  What a run!  His first was issue 194 (Dec. 1975), in between those 9 and a half years Sal penciled 115 regular issues plus four annuals!

That was one of the first Hulk stories I ever read.  Everything that ever appealed to me about the Hulk is on that page.
