Brian: As Troy pointed out on an episode of Community, there used to be a show called "Happy Days" and there was an episode where a guy really did jump over a shark, and you know what? It was the best one!

As with so many things, however, Troy is wrong.

I have never read the entire Hulk series, or even half of it. But I have read the first 6 issues countless times.

So much of what's recounted in this thread sounds like it stems from those stories where Banner's efforts to control the Hulk led to a variety of arrangements between their two consciousnesses.

But the thing is, Lee and Kirby managed to throw enough spaghetti at the wall in those 6 issues that I feel new rewards every time I go through them. If all these iterations listed here were done in the same fashion, they'd probably amount to just a couple years worth of material!

Of all the long-running Marvel titles, I think I've read the least of the Hulk. I read JB's run, bits and pieces of later stuff, and a scattering of issues from before JB, but I still haven't read most of the 60s, 70s, and pre-JB 80s. It's definitely on my Essentials list.

Aaron, consider this is strong recommendation from me for those pre-1980s HULK issues.

I think maybe my never reading more Hulk came from the fact that when I was reading current comics, it was nearly impossible to match my first Hulk experience. My first issue was 314, by JB, containing the greatest punch in all of comics! After JB's short run, the Hulk never seemed as good a series. Now I know the early stuff has to be great, but somehow it unintentionally slipped to the bottom of my "must eventually read" order.

Doesn't this cover just make you want to read those earlier issues Aaron?

I love the Hulk from Stan and Jack all the way until Sal leaves in the 1980s. Aside from the John Byrne blip, the character has been wasted.

By the by, Herb Trimpe as artist with Severin inking is fantastic. Trimpe inking Trimpe is exquisite

The first two issues of The Incredible Hulk that I bought featured Adam Warlock and Wolverine.

Needless to say, I was hooked.

Then, I ran across a reprint of this little beauty with incredible interior art by Jim Starlin and Joe Sinnott -

The Herb Trimpe era covers are fantastic.

I've been curious for sometime....why so few Sal Buscema covers despite his long tenure as interior artist?  Any ideas about that?
