Ben Grimm really is a great, versatile character when done right, and can be teamed up with just about anyone in any setting.
He's a street brawler, and he's an astronaut and explorer. He speaks in old-fashioned New York street slang, and he's the only engineer out there who can keep up at being Reed Richards's partner in science. He can be melancholy, and he has a can-do attitude in the face of danger.
Is there any kind of comic story into which he wouldn't fit naturally?

I flat-out loved team-up books when I was a kid. Not only was the main character usually a great hero in his own right (Batman, Ben, Spidey), but you also got to see the lesser-lights shine and find out more about them. Marvel Two-In-One, especially during the Project: Pegasus era and immediately afterwards, was a favorite title. The Thing and the Scarlet Witch! The Thing and the Impossible Man! The Thing and Wonder Man! The Thing and... Adam Warlock?? Man, I loved that book...

It's weird, but until this thread came up, I almost forgot that this was one of my favorite comics as a kid. The one with Captain America, and I think he and Ben fight the Badoon? Loved it. Someone much better off than me should commision a Marvel Two-In-One series from JB. Say, have JB pick the other character, to have that sense of suprise you got from the book itself. As Brian pointed out, you just never knew who Ben would be paired with. From Cap, to the Aquarian. Really ran the gamut.

The single biggest problem I had writing TWO-in-ONE -- and the main reason I was pleased when it became simply THE THING -- was that an good "team-up" for Ben was pretty much automatically a good FF story. Unless the Thing was second banana in his own book, which would have kinda defeated the point!

My favorite, and one of my favorite comics, is the team-up with Doc Savage which won't be getting reprinted anytime soon.

I remember coming home from work to my bachelor pad in '79, and sitting on the sofa and reading MTIO #50.
