In the long result, this is all nothing more than a storm in a teacup. Since the Nu52 has given us all new versions of these characters, much as did the birth of the Silver Age back in the 1950s, there is no "outing" at all. No more than there would have been had Barry Allen been revealed to be Gay in his first SHOWCASE appearance. A brand new character cannot be "outed", since s/he has no history. Can't come out of the closet, never having been in it!

I don't know what outing means but I was by accident in a gay club once and all the walls had posters that said "come out" and a guy pointing so it looks like the finger follows you. Then I needed to piss and in there were even more posters. Then I realized that I should "come out" and say that I was gay. But to me it seems a little bit old. Who would care today if someone is gay so what is it to "out"? 10-15 years ago when I was a t the gay club then maybe, but now it seems old. Especially when it's a "new" character who hasn't seen much of the old anti-gay intolerant shit. Let the intolerant people come out so I can gently avoid them would be better.

In a testament to the strength of the original characters as well as the
idea that all you need is a good writer, not a new character.... It
appears to me that the best of the crop are those characters that
underwent minimal changes. Swamp Thing, animal Man, batman,
Nightwing.

Now I will shut up about this but it is as JB said it's nothing to out and also it's no society right now where you "out" that you are gay, that is long gone. Period.

Another bulletin from Planet Lars. I wonder what color the sky is, there?

Lars, as a therapist who has worked with many LGBT clients, I can
assure you that coming out is still an incredibly huge issue for both
those who do it as well as those close to these individuals.... He'll,
even those who have chosen that they be effected, despite not
knowing them.

We do know that Dick, Jason, Tim and Damien have all used the code name Robin

What is it about modern comic fans (and writers, although there's hardly a difference these days) that they can't let go of ANYTHING?

Since the tipping point, when fans-turned-pro began to outnumber the Old Guard -- and that must have been about thirty years ago -- we (the comicbook industry) have been more and more pandering to the anal retentive fans. TRAINING them to be anal retentives, even!

Ultimately, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

A friend argued that what bothered her was that if Alan is gay now, he can't be obsidian's father -if Alan is now a young guy, even if he was straight, how many years we would have to wait for that Obsidian and Jade to be born, grow and become superheroes?-

I don't even came close to make her understand that this is the 4th or 5th version of Alan Scott in a new universe in a new parallel Earth...

I've heard this, too.  Kind of getting sick of it.  Friends: lots of gay people are parents, both biological and adoptive -- just like straight people.  Some choose to be parents -- some become parents before they come to terms with their sexuality -- there's a million reasons... just like straight people.

Alan Scott can be Obsidian's father, Jade's father -- ANYBODY'S father!  Being gay does not stop you!  Only ignorant writers can.

From the link in the OP:
"DC Comics Co-Publisher Dan DiDio said that a "prominent" DC Comics character will soon come out of the closet..."

I agree with what JB is saying- this is not the same character. DC's claims above are false advertising.

Got to realize that when Didio is talking, he is using his own very specific definitions of words. Talking and communicating, not the same thing where he's concerned.
