John Byrne:

And, since they DON'T know there are "multiple earths"...

=======

Most civilians wouldn't even know there are multiple Green Lanterns to begin with!

This is amusing on another level, for me.

When I was starting in The Biz, I went thru several frustrating levels, working my way up the ladder. The first was when I was getting enough work that I could quit my "day job" and work exclusively in comics. That mean I no longer needed to add a qualifier when I said I was a "comicbook artist". Except, because of the lead time, when people asked me if they could find my books on the racks, there was a long period when I still had to say "No."

Then, of course, there was a long period when the books were coming out on a regular schedule, but they were WHEELIE AND THE CHOPPER BUNCH, DOOMSDAY PLUS ONE, and even IRON FIST. Stuff nobody had heard of!

I found myself imagining that I would reach the zenith of my career, and be assigned to GREEN LANTERN, one of my all-time favorite characters -- but one nobody had heard of!!

>>>"Green Lantern is Gay now" will get some people into the shops who
might never otherwise have crossed the threshold.<<<

Likely true. Wonder if they'll feel conned when they realize it's not the Green
Lantern who was portrayed by Ryan Reynolds...

It's like "We need some gay people, boys!", "Well, send them to Earth 2!"

Most people will never know the difference in Green Lanterns. Even if they buy Earth 2. Instead most newbies will just go to a comic shop and ask for GL and be blissfully unaware of what they purchase or protest.

The Nu Alan Scott, like Miles Morales before him, is just another poor little baby child who's born in a ghetto...

OMG!  I just realized something.  Doesn't the Earth-Two Green Lantern have a long-standing "weakness for wood"?  Oh, the irony...

Mark Haslett wrote: "If everything here on Earth 1 is nu and everything over on Earth 2 is nu, then what's the difference between Earth 1 and Earth 2? The drapes? What's the point of having an Earth 2?"

The point as I understand it is to continue to use the characters of Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, Al Pratt, etc. without having them standing right next to the better known Earth 1 characters who share the same codenames. The first issue of the Nu "Earth 2" comic dealt with the problem of multiple Supermen, Batmen, and Wonder Women so now the only JSA'ers left are the ones who aren't exact duplicates of their Earth 1 counterparts. Still, to distinguish them and give them some room of their own to flex their muscles, they're shown to exist on Earth 2, where they don't have to say to everyone, "Yes, I'm Green Lantern, but no, I'm not that Green Lantern..."

It's a way of taking some of DC's oldest characters out of the back seat, giving them a Nu52 makeover, and setting them on their own road.

Since Power Girl and the Huntress still have some awkward ties to those Earth 2 Superman and Batman "duplicates" they're off in their own book (Worlds' Finest) where their central problem is how to either get back home or find their way in a world they never made...

Yes, Josh, that is one of the "go-to" jokes about this announcement, up there with the fact that he's "Fla-Ming!" and his colorful 1940's costume was simply "Fab-U-Loooousss!"

Untold numbers of others are certain to follow... I'm sure there's something to be done with the fact that Alan Scott is left-handed.

I wonder if the vulnerability to wood will be present in the new version
of the character. Hal Jordan and the other GLs are no longer
susceptible to yellow and haven't been for some time now.

Again, I don't see how this helps the hobby. It will surely boost sales
on that specific and create a very temporary buzz, but the crowds will
go away and nobody is likely to get into the hobby over it. So, unless
they have a stellar writer on that book and some really substance, the
only long-term effect will be the growing cynicism of the currently
shrinking readership.

I can hardly wait for the next big event, "The Ultimate, Final, No We Really Mean It This Time, Crisis on Multi-Parallel Earths That Finally Straightens Things Out With Another Reboot, But We Just Want To Re-Hash Everything and Continue to Have Multiple Characters of the Same Name Crisis"

Starring Superman of Earth 2, Superman of Earth 2(2), Superman of New Earth 2, Superman of Earth 1, Superman of Earth Prime, Superman of New Earth, Superman of Earth 4.... I could go on, but we all know that this too shall pass. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
